If Alaska wildland trails were rated this one is diamond. 14 or 15 miles. Starting at Primrose campground 4 or 5 miles going up through Woodlands and meadows with a view back to Kenai Lake. Puddles and mud on this part of trail. Dense mushrooms in early fall. Blueberries. An old miners cabin.
Then 4 or 5 miles of high open glacier views in the lake area, hiking on a center ridge of hardpan. Often times the breeze keeps summer bugs away. And 4 or 5 miles descending into Seward, starting with a view of resurrection bay. I think the bridge below the lake is halfway timewise.
The last miles of descent can be hard on the feets! Be sure to keep restorative and rehydrating materials in vehicle. Lawn chairs and hot soup.
Stunning trail, probably my favourite hike we did in this area! We went about 4 miles before turning back — incredible forest and mountain views with a few easy river crossings. Well maintained trail. Highly recommend.
I waited until my last day in Alaska to do this hike and I owns I would have done it over the others in the area. It was stunning!
Techy. Rolling. Stunning. This trail has it all with a lot of terrain variation. Please help us keep our local jem wild and kind.
Great trail! The back half of the trail is completely exposed and provides lots of great views of the valley and surrounding peaks. Hiked this back in August and hiked up the Summer Trail and came down the Winter Trail. The different scenery on the way down was probably not worth it considering the trail was as you’d expect it to be — extremely muddy in lots of places. Bathroom stalls at the end were much appreciated. Overall a great hike!
