Located on the Nabesna Road, this free camping area is the only National Park Service campground in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. It has 10 designated campsites, each with a picnic table and a fire ring. There are two vault toilets. Each site can accommodate a small to medium RV or other vehicles. It is free and open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis, but is not plowed during the winter so campsites may not be accessible. Reservations are not taken and are not required.
Kendesnii Campground is located at Mile Post 27.8 of the Nabesna Road. The Nabesna Road starts at mile 60 of the Tok Cutoff Highway in the town of Slana, AK. The dirt and gravel road is maintained by the State of Alaska. In Summer, regular passenger cars can make the journey to the campground. Any time of year, the campground may be inaccessible due to heavy rain or snow.
road in is a bit hazardous (denali highway like tire blowing/axel breaking pot holes) so beware; expect top speed to be about 15-20mph after the pavement ends (12 miles in?).
Campground is free to first come/first serve for a max of 7 days (10 spots?), campsites are decently sized with a picnic table and campfire "barrel" setup standard at most all the state campgrounds. Place is very clean as were the bathrooms (always a perk).
Very nice primitive campground. Reasonably level spots for RVs, clean vault toilets.
Medium to large sites with some tree cover. It was only half full while we were there. Next to twin lakes with a nice trail to the lake and small boat launch. Clean bathrooms. Highly recommend head net for bugs if coming in June! Nabesna Rd was easily passable up to the campground.
Quiet snowy campground with a pond and boat launch. All first come first serve. Delightful vault toilet (smells of cedar wood) but no water.
