**Primitive camping, aka Boondocking** requires a high level of self-sufficiency to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. Plan on no water, electric, cable, or Wifi hookups out in the wilderness. What if you forget something? Don't worry, it's about a mile to the nearest little country grocery store and restaurant called "Grand Pops". They serve up some great hamburgers and other home-style meals. Most people have "Hot Spots" on their phones these days. Don't let all the "whats and ifs" deter you. With a little bit of planning, a healthy dose of the adventurous spirit, your primitive camping will make you crave more. Here's some items to think about:
Water, toiletries, privacy tents, fire starters, cooking utensils, pots and pans, stove, fuel, utensils, first-aid kit, sunscreen, bug spray, sleeping bag, pillow, backpack, chairs, ice chest, trash bags. We ask that you please haul off your own trash.
**EXPLORE THE SURROUNDING NATURE**, build campfires, watch wildlife and enjoy a rejuvenating hike amidst the picturesque landscape.
**Relax at Camp Joy!** Peaceful tranquility and serenity will lift all the hustle and bustle weights of life off your shoulders! **Enjoy the great outdoors!** Camp Joy offers guests two docks available to use for fishing, lounging, getting in and out of kayaks on the property. The one shown was built as handicap accessible. This small lake is one of three lakes in the area called "***Cade Lakes***". Great for catching crappie, bass and catfish. Kids enjoy watching the turtles push each other off the logs seen around the banks. If you love to fish, the greatest fishing lake in Texas is a few miles away near Somerville, TX called "***Lake Somerville***". It's a scenic drive to the Overlook Marina and Lake Somerville Dam. Several State Parks surround Lake Somerville, the closest from this location is **"*Birch Creek State Park"*** with beautiful hiking trails. Highly recommend the drive to check the Parks out. Also recommend visiting "***Washington on the Brazos***", the birthplace of Texas and is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed. It is also a State Park. The "***Aggieland Wild Animal Safari***" is outside of Bryan College Station and is a great place to take the kids to interact with all kinds of animals. Offers a drive-thru in which you can drive thru as many times as you want, as well as a petting zoo and gift shop. And, if you like shopping, there are lots of antique shops and wineries at Round Top, another scenic drive about 45 minutes away. And all the ice cream lovers must visit the home of "***Blue Bell***" in Brenham, TX which is only open to the public during the weekdays, not weekends. While in Brenham, kids love to skate at the historic "***Silver Wings Ballroom***", known as one of the best skating rinks in Texas! Check for local events happening all around such as Aggie Football Games, Snook ChiliFest, Market Days on the Square in Caldwell and much, much more!

The most magical memorable experience! The view is spectacular and the cabins are thought out to the smallest details. A fishermans dream for sure, even though I am not a fisherman. A great home base for exploring the lake and local attractions. A true dream.
Old Camp Joy is a relaxing retreat in a beautiful place. My family stayed in the Huguenot, the largest cottage at Old Camp Joy. The lake view from the living and kitchen areas is spectacular and very private looking out on a cove. We ladies enjoyed Mojitos (made with fresh mint from the owner’s garden) on the covered porch. The thoughtful care and gifting that went into decorating is obvious. Everywhere you look, there is something unique and beautiful and yet it was comfortable. The kids loved canoeing on the lake. We grilled outdoors, made easy with the well-stocked kitchen. The baked goods are a must, especially the German chocolate cake. Old Camp Joy isn’t your ordinary lake cabin or B&B. It’s very special. The perfect getaway!
This place is so beautiful!! Three fabulous cabins on a hillside with a gentle green slope down to the water!! So peaceful, so quiet you can hear the birds, the crickets even hear the breeze!
You will not be disappointed!! There's even a gorgeous event center that would be the perfect wedding venue!!
Loved this place!!!
We had a wonderful relaxing time here. The Knox cabin was the best we’ve stayed in, and so clean with beautiful scenery.
The host was very kind and accommodating. The fishing was very relaxing and fun. We hope to make this our yearly getaway for a nice relaxing break. The cinnamon rolls we ordered was amazing!!
There are a couple of new B&B rentals on the lake. The established Camp Joy Retreat has several houses to choose from that can accommodate large gatherings. No wifi, but there is a place to do laundry, front porch sittin', beautiful cozy, unique decor and of course, right on the lake. It is located in an old neighborhood that is coming back to life. Its also 2 or 3 minutes from the boat landing that has a pier with an otter family living under it. It's a quiet country area. Great place to fish, ride bikes, take long walks, and enjoy the wildlife. It's very close to Longview (30 min), Daingefield State Park (20 min), Huges Springs, Avenger, Jefferson, and many other amenities and small towns.
