Lake Fork Campground is on the Blue Mesa Reservoir, near the reservoir's dam. It is a part of the historic Curecanti Recreation Area and is an ideal place to stay for days of boat recreation, hiking and taking in the views of the Black Canyon.
Jet skiing, water skiing and canoeing are some of the many water activities available on the reservoir.
Birding is also rewarding, with chances to see the black-billed magpie.
Along the shrubland, visitors can spot Gunnison's prairie dogs popping out of their holes.
Flush toilets are available in summer months. Cell phone service is limited.
For anglers, a fish cleaning station is provided for conveniently preparing the days catch.
Concession run coin operated showers are nearby and open during summer months.
The steep canyon walls in this part of the reservoir were carved out by the Gunnison River, which once flowed with powerful intensity fueled by the snowmelt of nearby mountains.
Today, the Gunnison river is dammed in three places, creating three large and beautiful reservoirs to be enjoyed by visitors.
The land is characterized by semi-arid shrubland with vast expanses of sagebrush. The natural features and ecosystems of Curecanti vary greatly, with Riparian habitats, epic canyons and lush patches of Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and aspen trees.
The recreation area is just south of Gunnison National Forest and east of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. There's no shortage of options for scenic drives and hikes.
Try hiking the Curecanti Creek Trail or Hermit's Rest Trail off HWY 92..
Located 27 miles west of Gunnison on CO Highway 92 near the intersection with U.S. Highway 50 on the shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir. All types of camping from tents to large RVs can be accommodated at Lake Fork.
Very nice camp site with amazing views. Beware that showers are not working. We even called ahead because someone in our party has a medical condition and needs to shower regularly. We were assured that the shower was functional but arrived to find out it has been broken since the winter. Tim is good at his job and deserves a raise.
Good for RVs but is a little cramped in space. The tent campgrounds were all booked by the time we tried to reserve ours. Great views and clean restrooms. The drive is nice with great scenery.
Small spots close together good for a social outing or a quick overnight. A few of the tent spots are further away and a bit more secluded. Beautiful location within a short drive to Black Canyon of the Gunnison Nat’l Park, Gunnison Nat’l Park, Gunnison, and Crested Butte
The Host were Awesome, nice talking with Steve..very accommodating. Moved to a couple different sites on the 1st day and was no issue at all. Yes it's a parking lot with small spaces but right next to the boat ramp and site 69 on the upper level is right next to the restroom...All in all it worked just fine for what we needed(sleeping) We were on the lake for the majority of the time so no big deal about parking lot camping. I would recommend this if you are not staying at the site for the majority of your stay...
