We stayed at Monarch Spur at the beginning of this summer. The campground was terrific! The new owners are so kind and doing a great job updating the campground. The reservation process was easy. We stayed in a camper, and the electricity and water at the site was super accessible. Our friends stayed in one of the cabins, which was so cute (and a great little place to gather when the rain came thru). There were some hikes right out of the campground, and we actually made our way to the Colorado Trail intersection to set foot on that legendary trail. The river running thru the campground was a beautiful background noise and easy to stroll down to and dip toes in. There was a fishing pond a bit down stream that we spent the morning at with the kids. The bathrooms were immaculate - flush toilets, running water, warm showers, clean, well lit. We took advantage of their great communal spaces - gas grills, a deck, a covered pavilion, adirondack chairs and picnic tables. The camp store had lot of little essentials and treats. Great for thru hikers coming off the CO Trail, and fun and useful stuff for those of us just driving up with a camper. Hoping to be back here in the fall when the leaves are changing!
I want to say a bit about this campground. It’s the best we’ve stayed at in a long while. A new family just took over and this is their first summer. It has everything. Full hookups to tent camping. Full hookup sites are a bit tight but fine. It’s at over 8000 feet and the views are amazing. We can see snow. They have a nice camp store, WiFi that works, golf cart rental, a playground, kids games, a community area (even host occasional concerts) fishing, and a river running through. On site laundry and very clean bathhouse. It’s near a highway but we never found the road noise a problem. Didn’t even notice except an occasional truck using Jake brakes. It all but stopped at night.
Owners are super nice and helpful. And we even saw a moose. The stars are amazing here BTW.
The kids didn’t want to go anywhere they were happy just to hang out here at the campground.
Monarch Spur was a happy accident for us! We were just looking for something close to a place we knew about to go fishing. Well, lo and behold - Monarch Spur guests have access to the best little trout pond ever. We rented one of their golf carts (great offering) and were able to get all the grandkids and fishing supplies down to the pond. Everyone caught fish and we had a great time. The grounds are just lovely, the river is beautiful, and the hosts were flexible, friendly and very accommodating. The bath house and laundry were very clean and welcoming. We also appreciated the fun things to do like the kid's playground out in the meadow and the axe throwing games. We will be back!
We just got back from a long weekend stay here and loved it. The property itself is beautiful with lots of trees, right on the river and even has a stocked pond for fishing. The RV spots on the upper road have the most privacy with tree coverage but all spots seemed like good options. We have two young kids who kept asking to go back to the playground. It’s a new swingset and lots of lawn space which was very well maintained. Our kids (and us) also loved the access to the river in the community area. The family that own it were always helpful and friendly. We would definitely go back!
