About Campground

Overview

Stevens Creek Campground lies on the north shore at the eastern end of Blue Mesa Reservoir. This is the closest campground to the town of Gunnison, CO. Popular with boaters,

Stevens Creek has easy access to the reservoir. It is very sunny and bright, and the scent of sagebrush adds to the camping experience.

A bit downstream is the Morrow Point Reservoir and the Crystal Reservoir, both surrounded by the steep cliffs of the Black Canyon.

Recreation

Stand up paddleboarding, fishing, canoeing, and other water sports are popular here.

Birding is rewarding, as this shallower end of the reservoir is ideal for waterfowl. For hikers, try the 1.5 mile Neversink Trail, which meanders along the Gunnison River upstream of Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Facilities

The 53-site campground offers waterfront-sites and a wide variety of amenities including a picnic area, self pay station and drinking water available late-May to mid-September.

Natural Features

The campground sits at an elevation of 7,540 feet and is characterized by a semi-arid, treeless shrubland. The mesa landscape is covered with sagebrush and receives less than 12 inches of rain a year.

Nearby Attractions

Head into Gunnison for a meal, a bit of shopping, or a visit to the local park or museum. Gunnison is known for its western ambiance and small town friendliness. Mountain biking and hiking can be found at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area just south of Gunnison

Directions

Very nice, well maintained campground. Clean bathrooms, friendly host. The only downside is the proximity to Highway 50 which can be noisy.

If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive place to camp on your way across Colorado, this is a good option. Sites are fairly level with nice tables and fire pits, and the views of the Lake & sunset are great. Plenty of space for a motorhome and Jeep in the site. Pit toilets (I think, but I did not use) and some scattered water faucets are the only facilities, but if you are self contained, this is a nice option. They have a boat ramp as well, but I can’t speak to that since we are not hauling a boat.

Well there is only two other campers here now. That’s nice but the sign Toxic Algae Bloom is kinda scary. Don’t tough that water but wash off your fish. Uh don’t worry I won’t do that! I imagine at a different time of year it’s probably been full of water so boats can go out from the boat ramp but now it’s a small creek. It’s ok for a quick stop.

Not enough stars availability for this place. Quite, by the lake, chipmunks everywhere. Fishing available. No services at all, complete boondocking.

Right off the road, quiet and convenient! The pit toilets are clean and there are dog stations scattered throughout. Our site was level and spacious.

The online pay system was glitchy so we had to run into town to get some cash. I’d come prepared next time!
