Camping Tips
Bring drinking water; otherwise, treat water from streams and springs before drinking to kill harmful pathogens. Vigorously boil local water for at least three minutes, or use a filter which is specifically labeled for removal of Giardia. Chemical treatments (iodine and chlorine) are not considered effective.
Freezing temperatures and snow can occur anytime of the year, but mainly between October and April. Dress for the weather.
Practice Leave No Trace outdoor ethics: do not build a camp within 200 feet of streams.
Light weight camping stoves are encouraged.
If using firewood it must be dead AND down branches only. Keep fires small.
During hunting seasons, hikers are encouraged to wear high visibility clothing.
It's about a 40-ish minute drive up Canaan Loop. DRIVE SAFE. Mountain-side driving. The trail itself isn't too tough. A little over a mile. IT'S SO WORTH IT. Table Rock has the most beautiful view. If you're in the area, it's worth taking the trip up there. ENJOY.
This is a nice and easy hike with some fantastic views. It can get muddy, though. It's best to access off of the WV32 side of Canaan Loop, and it will take some time to get to the trailhead. I will only take our Jeep on the Blackwater side these days.
Great trail. But DO NOT FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS DIRECTIONS to get to this place if it takes you via Parsons. The road (Rt 244) from Parsons via Dry Fork Road is a dirt road and is blocked for the public. To reach here, take the Canaan loop road from Route 32, south of Davis. Travel west along this scenic gravel road along the North fork red run for about 11 miles to reach the trail. The trail itself is low to medium difficulty and about 1.2 miles long. The trail is full of beautiful plants and trees such as rhododendrons, ferns, running cedar etc.
Nice short little hike off of the Canaan Loop with a great overlook. Be sure to wear waterproof boots because it gets very mucky along the trail.
Visited back in the winter of 2020. Best way to come is using the the loop road from 244. It seemed to be gravel and was rather smooth for our truck. Saw several people camping back in there. The loop road between here and Lindy point is 4x4 and very rough and we didn't attempt it. Parking is limited to a few cars and the trail is narrow and swampy in spots. Since it was a snowy morning we were a little disappointed at the view as we couldn't see much, but that's no fault of the view, just weather being weather.
