The American Alpine Club (AAC) campground at the New River Gorge resides in Fayetteville, WV, on a 40-acre parcel adjacent to the National Park and within walking distance of popular crags at the New River Gorge. There are 40 private sites and ten communal sites. No RVs, no trailers, and no vehicles over 20' are permitted. There are two large communal fire pits, a bathhouse with coin-operated showers ($1 for minutes), and a pavilion. We're working on a wifi solution, but it comes and goes.
Detailed directions:
-From Fayetteville, go north on Highway 19,
-Turn left on Ames Heights Road, the second left after the bridge.
-Drive on Ames Heights road for .6 miles,
-At a crossroads with an "Adventures on the Gorge" sign, take a hard left, downhill, on a narrow blacktop road.
-Drive down this road for .2 miles, the gravel pullout for the camp is on the left.
Great bathrooms. Great sites. Great service. Great communication. We forgot our tent poles and they held onto them for two months so we could get them back!!!!
Very cool place with a unique vibe to other campgrounds. Everyone was extremely friendly and the facilities were top notch. The dish wash skinks were a fantastic resource. I've never seen such a relaxed vibe and welcome feeling from staff and guests. The communal camping area was a little more crowded than what I understood from the map and parking is limited but the overflow lot isn't too far of a walk. For the weekend of memorial day 23' the campground had double booked one site with my party and another. AAC was extremely apologetic of their mistake and went to considerable lengths to accommodate both parties. Definitely would stay again.
Very cool camping area with fairly clean showers. Fairly clean, but far better than most campsite showers. Not far from the great climbing around the gorge. There’s a big pavilion and a couple of fire pit areas for communal hanging too, if you’re into that kind of thing.
Stayed at vehicle site #2 (not fully level, but I also have a very short wheelbase which doesn’t help). Bathrooms were clean and the campground is very nice, also quiet. The location is prime time for exploring New River Gorge. Will absolutely come back! It’s also convenient there’s a market maybe a half mile down the road that has really good breakfast and anything essentials you may need.
It was OK. The parking wasn't level at all which was a bit of a pain. There are level sites though, so if you need it I'm sure you can get one with some pre-planning. The genderless washrooms/showers are a little awkward as there's very little privacy within them. I'm sure it's great campground for the right person but I would try one of the many others in the area when I go back.
