About Campground

Overview

Battle Run Campground is conveniently located just south of Summersville, West Virginia, on the shores of the largest lake in the state.

Superb water quality and sheer sandstone cliffs make Summersville Lake a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Recreation

The 2790-acre lake provides excellent boating, water skiing, swimming, and scuba diving. Anglers will find large and smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and catfish. Trout are stocked below the dam in spring and fall. Visitors also enjoy the great hiking, biking, hunting, geocaching, and picnicking opportunities on the lands surrounding the lake. For high adventure seekers, whitewater rafting is available year-round on the world class Gauley River. The Summersville Lake area also offers technical rock climbing.

Facilities

This large waterfront campground offers 110 campsites with electric hookups, along with seven primitive walk-to tent sites. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, laundry facilities and a dump station. An accessible boat ramp and fishing dock are on-site. Younger campers love the park's playground, nature trails, and large shade trees.

Natural Features

Scenic Summersville Lake is known for its striking cliffs and quiet coves along 60 beautiful miles of shoreline. Dense forests of maple, oak, hickory, beech and birch trees cover the region.

Wildlife, including black bear, deer, grouse and turkey, is abundant in the area.

Nearby Attractions

The historic Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is a 10-minute drive from the campground. The park offers a museum, three Gauley River overlooks and hiking trails as well as a Civil War Battle Reenactment every other year. Summersville Lake Marina and Sarge's Dive Shop are 11 miles away, offering kayak and pontoon boat rentals. The town of Summersville, another five miles north, has several grocery stores, restaurants and service stations. Mountain Lake Campground is a privately managed campground with lake access. Summersville Lake Retreat is three miles east on Route 129 offering cabins and lighthouse tours. World-renowned rock climbing on the New River Gorge- just 18 miles south. Within the 63,000 acres of New River Gorge River are over 1,400 established rock climbs. "The New" has become one of the most popular climbing areas in the country. The cliffs at New River Gorge are made up of a very hard sandstone, and range from 30 to 120 feet in height.

We stayed overnight at Battle Run Campground in G loop site 99 which is a long pull through. We were in a 36’ 5th wheel. This was during first come first serve season and there were plenty of sites available. We arrived around 1 pm but off-season the check in gate doesn’t open until 5 pm. Once the office opened registration was easy. There are “no pets allowed” signs at the gate but unfortunately some people ignore them and bring their dogs. The campground is easily accessible from Hwy 19 and there are signs on the highway. I didn’t see any low limbs that would cause a problem for a tall rig on the way in or in the campground. Our site had a long gravel pad with plenty of room for our camper and truck once we unhooked. The site was level and had a fire ring w/grill, picnic table and lantern pole. There are no water spigots at the sites and I didn’t see any in the campground. The only water I saw to fill your tanks was at the dump station which I find less than desirable. There is 50-amp service at the sites. Our Southwire Surge Guard power protection device tripped 3 times that I know of shutting off power momentarily the night we were there. I received 1 bar of AT&T cell signal. With an antenna my channel scan showed 4 OTA TV channels but none came in clear. There were pay phones located with the vending machines outside at the bath house. There was a laundry room in the bath house too. The bath house was very clean and more modern than many I’ve used in other COE campgrounds. We saw several sheriff patrols in the campground during our one night stay. We were able to get cheaper diesel fuel at the Sheetz next to the Wal-Mart in Summersville but it’s about 12 miles away. We paid $17 a night using a pass. We enjoyed our overnight stay at Battle Run Campground.

We were planning to stay at the free campground a few miles back but little did we know we were arriving at the start of Gauley season so the water in the lake went down a bit each day (they release the water for the rafting). We lucked out and got an amazing spot right on the lake with an almost 360 water view. The park was busy on the weekends and about 1/3 full during the week. We stayed in September 2017 and would stay again, for as long as the park allows. Water and electric at the site, nice dump station. Great cell service (AT&T and verizon) and nice interior roads. Some trees need trimmed and they have pull thrus that are more parallel parking, not exactly big rig friendly.

Awesome place for family. Can't recommend any campground higher..perfect for kids. Scenery is amazing. Volleyball, basketball, playground. Bike riding. Fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming. Need I say more. Vending machines on site, wash and shower and restrooms. Security and town police patrol a lot. Staff r friendly and place kept immaculate. Rv and tent camping. Drawbacks. No pets unless they have service tags. No water or sewage hookups at any sites. Because of terrain and rock. Can't install. Still out of 50 campgrounds in my life. My family loves this place the most. Even has a beach for swimming. Pic nic shelters. Multiple boat launch sites and kayak launch sites, plus fishing pier with shade.

Very convenient to lake access for swimming, kayaking, or boating. The campsite was very nice and would be 5 stars if the campground had someone to contact after hours for some roudy teens running wild at 1am. Some of them even climbed a wall and got on the roof of the bath house. Sucks when someone can take something nice and ruin it for you.

This is a great campground with lake access. Not all sites have a water view but if you book in advance you can get one. There are many sites with a water view. The rates are great. We kayaked from our site and absolutely enjoyed all it had to offer!
