Located along Cooper Creek and the Kenai River, Cooper Creek South Campground presents a beautiful wooded area with sweeping mountain views within close proximity to many recreational opportunities.
Sockeye (Red) salmon fishing is a popular activity on the nearby Kenai and Russian Rivers, and both boat and bank fishing offer excellent catches. The nearby Resurrection Pass Trail takes hikers and bikers on a 38-mile scenic adventure that climbs from 500 to 2,600 feet.
Cooper Creek South offers about 20 campsites available for advanced reservation. Amenities include drinking water, vault toilets, picnic tables, campfire rings and dumpsters. Parking aprons are gravel and parking is limited. A dump station is available for a fee at nearby Quartz Creek Campground.
At an elevation of 400 feet, Cooper Creek South sits among a spruce and cottonwood forest. The Chugach National Forest covers 5 million acres and is comprised of arid tundra wilderness, jagged mountains, deep fjords, glacier-fed rivers and the Prince William Sound.
From Anchorage, go south on Seward Highway to Sterling Highway. Turn towards Soldotna at the 'Y' junction. Cooper Creek Campground is at Milepost 50.7 of the Sterling Highway, on the opposite side of the river.
Great campsite, quiet with lots of privacy. Scott and Cory are wonderful camp hosts, friendly and informative. (They agreed to take our recycling to Anchorage for drop off. Thanks, Cory!)
NOTE: it would be **REALLY NICE** if DNR/FS campsites had recycling containers.
Really pretty. Got a spot right on a little stream. Camp host super nice and helpful. Definitely recommend!
Good spacing between sites and the hosts were very helpful finding spots we could spend a few nights, since we had arrived without reservations. The pit-privy was clean and stocked with TP and the hand-pump for water worked. Great proximity to salmon fishing on the Russian and Kenai Rivers.
Man this was a really cool place to visit. We just stopped in for the day before fishing season closed and found several nice rainbow trout plus it was fun to see the spawning salmon. The campground is beautiful and I would love to come back here and camp!
The stand out experience year after year are always the Hosts. These folks are on top of things. My site was freshly groomed when I arrived: no trash and even the gravel was raked. Every day you see them walking around doing the grounds maintenance and changing out all the reservation plaques.
As for the campground, fun as always. It's rather close to the road, so Pro Tip: get one of the sites as close to the Creek as possible so the sound of the water drowns out the sound of the traffic.
The camp is situated a 2 minute walk from Two Brother's Roadhouse, where you can get a nice bite to eat. Also within a reasonable 5 or so mile drive you can find a grocery store, laundry, hot showers, gas station, charter fishing, ebike rentals and tourist shopping.
It's also a great launching off point for adventures either to Seward or to the Kenai.
