About Campground

Overview

Maple Canyon Campground is known for its unique cliffs, arches, and scenic views of the Sanpitch Mountains. It is a small campground nestled between towering conglomerate rock walls on either side of the canyon. A favorite among rock climbers, notably for a formation called The Pipe Dream, the campground is just 3 miles from Freedom, Utah.

Recreation

Rock climbing is the campground's main draw, attracting climbers from all over the world with its numerous routes for beginners and experts alike.

Over 140 bolted routes are available with climbing grades from 5.4 to 5.14.

Facilities

The campground contains one group site and several single-family sites. Sites 2, 3 and 4 are walk-to tent sites that must be accessed by carrying gear a short distance from the parking area. Vault toilets are provided but there is no water. Roads and parking spurs are dirt. Accessible by all passenger vehicles.

Natural Features

The campground is nestled among thick groves of maples below beautiful, towering conglomerate walls at an elevation of 6,700 feet. The canyon contains over 40 cliffs ranging in height from 30 to 300 feet. A variety of wildlife makes its home in the canyon.

Nearby Attractions

The canyon offers some excellent hiking, biking and horseback riding opportunities. Three steep scenic loop trails (three to five-mile loops) provide access to many of the rock climbing sites in the canyon, such as the famous Pipe Dream tunnel. Panoramic views east into Sanpete Valley and beyond to the Wasatch Plateau reveal themselves near the tops of the trails and cliffs. The Sanpitch Recreation Area and Chicken Creek Campground can be found nearby.

Great place to visit.

Rock climbers especially 5.5 ratings on rock climbing in some areas. 3 trails up the canyon that great to hike!

Nice canyon to drive up ...then turns into high clearance jeep or ohv road that goes up the canyon.

Maple Canyon is a perfect spot for teaching young climbers, over 550 routes from 5.4 to 5.14, routes are easily accessible. Cool temps With its narrow canyons providing ample shade. The eroded cobblestone-sized conglomerate, add to the allure of this place.

Summary: I'm so happy they put a wooden ladder on the hardest part to climb up/down instead of the loop rope. It's a great hike and bouldering and can be done with kids if you're careful and comfortable with some risks.

I came up here today with my boys as a throwback to when I was in college, and this was one of my favorite places. I intended that we wouldn't be able to hike the upper part with my 5 and 7 year old, though I've seen people with little kids before. Some of the places where you go around or under or over big boulders have a high possibility of slipping, falling, hitting your head or spraining an ankle if you're not careful and pay attention where you put your feet! But we were really careful and had a great time, besides some bumps, trips, and bruises. I thought for sure we'd have to stop at the loop rope because even I had anxiety about that part in the past. Now I'm kicking myself because there is actually a great, sturdy wooden ladder as well as a knew rope, and I didn't get a picture of it! Hopefully someone can snap a picture. The leaves were beautiful!!

We made it to the wall of water, and it's also a great place to explore all the other nooks and crannies.

Maple Canyon is such a beautiful place for a nice stroll, a good hike, for rock climbing, and for family-friendly, outdoor fun. It's absolutely gorgeous in some & fall. Keep in mind, it's usually VERY busy during the season with parking lots full. You'll see vehicles parked on the narrow roads, so please go slow and be cautious of pedestrians.

We had the pleasure of going up for one last visit before the snow hit and the roads closed. Enjoy ♡
