Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore hugs the Lake Superior shoreline for more than 40 miles along Michigan's northern coast. Lake Superior is the largest, deepest, coldest, and most pristine of all the Great Lakes. Camping at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a great way to relax and enjoy the beauties the lakeshore has to offer. Campgrounds are rustic, and do not provide electric or sewer hookups. Campers, trailers, and RVs are welcome, note there are generator free areas. Cell phone reception is limited, so unplug, unwind, and enjoy the serenity Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Campgrounds has to offer.
Hurricane River Campground is located 12 miles west of Grand Marais and is divided into two separate sections off H-58, Hurricane River Upper, and Hurricane River Lower. The Upper Campground has 10 sites and the Lower Campground has 12. Campground amenities include water, pit toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and handicap accessible sites. Hurricane River Lower Campground is the trailhead for the Au Sable Light Station, which is a 3 mile round trip stroll to the lighthouse with views of Lake Superior, Jacobsville Sandstone, and Shipwreck remains. Upper Hurricane River is tucked back in the woods with beautiful deciduous trees between sites allowing for the woodsy experience of Northern Michigan.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers 100 miles of hiking trails leading to waterfalls, beaches, forest wilderness, cultural sites, and breathtaking cliff-top views of Lake Superior. Whether you have only a few minutes, hours, or days to see a portion of the lakeshore, one of these hikes may be for you.
Lake Superior's rugged shoreline invites boaters to explore the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with its miles of colorful sandstone cliffs and long stretches of sandy beaches. Peaceful inland lakes also invite boaters to linger in the northwoods. Check the marine weather forecast before venturing out. Watch the weather carefully while on the lake. The weather can change suddenly and unexpectedly. Just because it's calm in Munising Bay or Grand Marais Harbor does not mean it is calm along the more distant shores. The Pictured Rocks cliffs rise 50 to 200 feet directly from the lake, offering precious few protected places if the wind and waves increase.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore drive-in campsites are rustic and do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups. Campsites provide a picnic table, fire ring with grill grate, and tent pad. The campgrounds have vault toilets and well water. Typically there is no cell phone reception.
Sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, inland lakes, deep forest, and wild shoreline beckon you to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The power of Lake Superior shapes the park's coastal features and affects every ecosystem, creating a unique landscape to explore. Hiking, camping, sightseeing, and four-season outdoor opportunities abound.
Guided kayaking and other boat tours within the national lakeshore are offered by authorized private companies. Pontoon boat and other rentals for use on Lake Superior are available in nearby communities.
A $10.00 service fee will apply if you change or cancel your reservation. You can cancel or change reservations through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.
If a customer cancels a reservation the day before or on the day of arrival they will be charged a $10.00 service fee and will also forfeit the first night's use fee (not to exceed the total paid for the original reservation). Cancellations for a single night's reservation will forfeit the entire use fee but no cancellation fee will apply.
Changing an Existing Reservation: When changes are made prior to the cut-off window:
If a customer wants to switch dates that are entirely outside of the original reservation dates, there is a $10 change fee.
There is no change fee if a customer extends or shortens a reservation, as long as the change includes dates from the original reservation. If they choose to depart early, they may forfeit the recreation fee for the day of departure.
There is no change fee if the customer wants to switch sites that are the same price with the same reservation dates in the same facility.
If a reservation is made that includes dates beyond the maximum booking window, that reservation cannot be changed until 18 days have passed from the original booking date.
Late Cancellations or Cancellations within the Cut-off Window
Pictured Rocks NL is located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, between the towns of Munising (west) and Grand Marais (east). Access the west side of the park via Michigan highways M-28 and M-94 to Munising. State highway M-77 leads to Grand Marais on the east side. Alger County Road H-58 runs parallel and through the park, providing access to spur roads that lead to scenic overlooks, trailheads, campgrounds, beaches, etc. Many roads are closed in winter due to snow.
All campsites are $25.00 per day by reservation only. Senior Pass and Access Pass holders receive a 50% discount must be entered when making reservation
We booked a site last minute and we’re pleasantly surprised by the campground. Beautiful beach just a minutes walk from campsite. Au sable lighthouse trail connected to campground as well as log slide lookout just a few miles down.
Fantastic campsite right up from Lake Superior. We stayed at the Lower section which is just steps from the water. You’ll be able to fall asleep listening to the waves crash on the beach. You have easy beach access here and then also access to the North Country Trail which from this campground is just a short venture to the Au Sable Lighthouse. Other hiking and overlook sites are a short drive away.
One of my favorite camp grounds! The sites are spaced out pretty well so you get some privacy from other campers. The Upper sites are a bit more of a trek down to the beach/trail, but it still is pretty close! The lower sites you may have more travelers passing by due to backpackers but I've never been bothered by them/it.
Lots of trails to explore, the beach is nice, the quiet hours are reasonable. The toilets aren't bad but please remember to close the lid when not in use! Helps the smells. Only downside is the flies that get in there.
