Captain Cook State Recreation Area is virtually undiscovered by most visitors to the Kenai Peninsula. It offers a peaceful setting of forests, lakes, streams and saltwater beaches.
The recreation area can be reached by driving 25 miles north of Kenai on the North Kenai Road to milepost 36.
Beautiful beach and surrounding forest area. You will definitely want bug spray and avoid being in the wooded area during the wet summer months.
The ocean was just gorgeous and allowed us to fish off the beach. The restroom wasn't the best. Some campsites have a view of the beach while most don't. They do include plenty of trails to hike on and a water spout.
52 spaces to camp, a couple with a partial water view. On a bluff so no easy access to the water. One spot with unmaintained road to get to beach outside of campground. Beach is rocky. Outhouse bathroom. There's nothing else out there so if you want nothing, this is the place. I see why it is referred to as a forgotten gem... There are plenty of other places to camp without having to get 36 miles off the main highway. I guess overall, a typical Alaska campground.
Was very foggy during our visit. But many well placed public bathrooms and lovely lake view. Well worth our drive from Kenai.
Enjoy walking the beach. We found some great rocks and a shark that had washed ashore. You never know what treasures you may find. There are great logs for sitting if a beach rest and maybe a fire is in your future.
