Make your way to Palmer along the Glenn Highway and head North. Turn right on E. Arctic Avenue (which eventually turns into the Old Glenn Highway). Drive and travel approximately two miles, the Campground is on the left directly after the Palmer Memorial Park.
Peaceful walk along the river. Trails are not well indicated however and it is easy to get temporarily lost and find yourself coming back on your steps. It is nice to walk on the river bed when water level is low.
Wish I could rate with a 2.5 star, because it wasn’t entirely a bad experience. Nice campground conveniently in Palmer. The road into and around the campground is narrow so be mindful of other vehicles. Some of the tent sites were quite small with the RV spots being stacked like sardines. Airport right across the street so be prepared to be woken up at 6/7 in the morning with airplanes taking off or landing till about 10/11 at night. Saw some pretty cool planes flying overhead. Main bathroom is only open from 8 am to 10 pm. Kept pretty clean with only one shower available. Other than that you will have to locate the other bathroom facility in the campground unless you have an RV.
Nice place to stay and the kids enjoyed the playground access but likely will not reserve a site in the future.
The campground is close to the Matanuska River with trails to the river directly from the campground. We had electricity at our site.
Pros: The campground is well kept, bathrooms feature flushing toilets & a shower in the "comfort station". The gal in the office was very nice, helpful, & professional.
Cons: The trails are NOT well marked, the map at the entrance of park is vaguely accurate but there are very few signs on the trails themselves. Some trails lead straight to the camping spots. The bathrooms are locked at 10pm each night and not unlocked until 8am the following morning. The Palmer Airport is across the hwy from the park and the landing flight path is directly over the campground so sleeping in a tent proved challenging outside the hours of about midnight to 6am.
