About Campground

This 9,143 acre wilderness is part of the St. Francois Mountains, one of the oldest landforms in North America. The wilderness is named for a family that once lived and farmed along the ridge top that is now known as Bell Mountain. Elevations range from 1,702 feet at Bell Mountain to 970 feet in the Joe's Creek drainage. Local relief is about 600 feet and is characterized by steep felsite and rhyolite outcroppings. Both Bell Mountain and Lindsey Mountain offer outstanding views of the surrounding area. The associated granite glades provide a variety of interesting plant and animal life.

Shut-in Creek crosses the area. It is a perennial spring fed stream with several shut-ins or gorges along its course. Steep talus slopes intersect the stream at several locations. Joe's Creek is another small perennial stream within the wilderness.

Restrictions: Foot and Horse only, no motorized or mechanized transportation. No camping within 100’ or trails, water, or other occupied campsites.

Surface Type: Unsurfaced, native material.

Other Activities: Backpacking, bird watching, and primitive camping.

Great place, tons of solitude. You can hike in and find a suitable place to camp. Just be sure to bring proper gear, and a compass if you plan to leave the trail. Be prepared if you leave the trail as it can get quite hairy. Hiked 2 hours in, mostly off the trail, hiked 5 hours out, no sign of a trail. Did not hear or see a soul the entire time. Great experience but come prepared!

Liked the views from the top. So clean, peaceful, refreshing experience.

Started from the "Bell Mountain N trailhead" and it is around 12 mies round trip, moderate terrain conditions. Loved it.

This is a LONG hike and there are no services (water, toilet, or cellular), so be sure you have everything you need. Follow the directions given by the US Forest Service to find the trailhead. *Note: The sign is NOT the trail. Follow the signs for the Ozark Trail from the parking lot. This is not a crowded trail. We loved the solitude.

This trail is not for everyone. I would not recommend it for new hikers or for small children learning to hike. Of course, you know your ability better than anyone. You can see our first hike at Happy Trails Hiking on YouTube

A stunning 11.5 mi loop, Bell Mountain loop has everything. There are downed trees but there are side trails to get around. Plenty of dispersed camping sites at the summit of Bell Mountain. The views are stunning and gives you a Blue ridge mountain vibe!
