The Robert W. Craig Campground is located off West Virginia State Highway Route 46, five miles from Elk Garden, West Virginia. The campground is located very close to Jennings Randolph Lake which provides many recreational opportunities including boating, swimming, picnicking, scenic overlooks and fishing.
The resident bald eagles have been breeding at Jennings Randolph Lake for over 10 years. Bring binoculars for the opportunity to spot an eagle's nest.
During your stay at the campground, enjoy playing a game of horse shoes or hiking the Sunset Trail, High Timber Trail or the 3D Archery Trail. There is also a playground, sandbox, and a swing set available for kids to play on. Located behind the Campground Store, the Kalbaugh Pond appeals to anglers for its stocked largemouth and small mouth bass, blue gill, and catfish.
At the pavilion, shoot some hoops on the basketball court or play a game of horse shoes. Birders will love the Songbird Trail and the High Timber Trail provides 28 varieties of labeled tree species. With the trailhead adjacent to the pavilion, visitors can try out the new 3D Archery Range.
Hiking trails can be accessed from the campground.
The pavilion includes a 30' by 40' canopy to protect you from the weather and is equipped with lights, electrical outlets, running water and approximately nine picnic tables. A handicap accessible portable toilet is also located nearby.
There is a shower house and full bathroom located in the front loop of the campground, as well as another half bathroom located at the back loop of the campground. The electric sites offer up to 50 AMP service and there is a water fill-up station located near the entrance station after you check into the campground. Before you leave, there is also a dump station available for you to empty the sewage tank of your camper.
The lake spans 952 acres in the rugged hills of West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains.
The pavilion is located inside of the Robert W. Craig Campground in a nice grassy field where your group can be semi-isolated for a nice reunion or picnic away from the rest of the campground.
A short mile away from the campground is the North Branch of the Potomac River, renowned as one of the finest trout fisheries on the East Coast.
The river is also an excellent location for whitewater rafting.
The city of Cumberland, with pleasant cobblestone pedestrian streets and boutique shops, makes for a nice visit.
**From Cumberland, MD:** Take US 220 south to US 50W, go west to WV 42N, go north to WV 46E. Follow the signs to the Robert W. Craig Campground.
Had a great time. The grounds are clean. The people super friendly. Having a shower and standard electric hookup is great. Really appreciate the store in camp.
Just finished our trip here and the campsites are really nice. They are clean, shady, and decent size. The restrooms are cleaned periodically but they were very clean. We ran into a few things that were kinda disappointing but mostly because of covid not because of the park. No visitors lake was closed and you have to use their firewood and most of the firewood was damp so it was hard to get a decent fire started. But over all was a nice trip and we will be coming back again! Also the lake picnic area is like a min away driving time and has a amazing view
Nice ACE campground. Most of the sites are very nice all are paved. Some have addition of gravel to extend the length. Some are short and some are far from level even though they’re paved. There is one shower house so if you’re in the higher numbered loop you need to walk through the wooded path or around the road. Bath house and shower house maybe a 6/10. Mostly clean but pretty dated and lack of upkeep in terms of painting etc.
the roads getting from Keyser, WV or Westernport MD are narrow, winding and have steep switchbacks. Not big rig friendly but big rigs can manage them at a low speed. I would NOT take the road to or from Keyser with a camper. We did it getting there and then did 46 to amd from Westernport. There are a couple of nice hiking trails. There’s no path, that we found, from the campground to the lake. The lake is beautiful and clear and has a swimming beach, picnic area and overlook with Waffle rock (an interesting 300 million year old unique geological pattern, and lake construction history.
This is our second campsite. I'm just a beginner camper, but I'm wildly excited. The children didn't want to leave. Every day there was some kind of entertainment for the children. Thank you, we enjoyed it very much.
I visited Robert Craig Campground in May '23. I had a great experience. The reason for the 4/5 stars is because they only have electric sites. If they had full-hookup I would give them 5/5. The staff is real nice, very well maintained. The store has weird hours but if you need something, a camp host will open the store on off hours. Restrooms and showers are kept clean. If you plan on doing work while visiting, there is very poor cell signal so consider yourself unplugged. The best cell signal was1-2 bars of LTE, no G. I plan on going back myself but without full-hookup I'll be leaving the family at home.
