Just 20 miles from Richmond, Pocahontas offers boating, picnicking, camping, camping cabins, 90-plus miles of trails, and nature and history programs. The Aquatic Center, which has a toddler pool, fountain wet deck, three-foot and five-foot-deep leisure pools, an activity pool and two tubular water slides, affords seasonal water-based activities for all. Three lakes offer plenty of fishing. Boat rentals are available seasonally by the 225-acre Swift Creek Lake. The Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, dedicated to Depression-era workers who helped build the state park system, is one of a handful in the nation. Two dining halls may be rented for meetings, weddings and special events. Rustic group facilities with primitive overnight cabins (bunkhouses) are available seasonally for larger groups.
The park's 2,000-seat amphitheater hosts the Pocahontas Premieres series of concerts and family-friendly entertainment.
Pocahontas State Park's location and 90 miles of trails make it particularly popular among bicyclists.

I went for the Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics. Speaking only from that experience, it's a very beautiful park and really, the water wasn't that cold. I'd give the river a 10/10.
Loved my first visit to Pocahontas SP. I was surprised at how empty it was for a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I only had time for about an hour hike so I picked the Beaver Lake trail hike which was about a 2.5 loop. It was scenic, it was interesting. Overall, really enjoyed it.
Beautiful park for hiking or biking. The trails are well maintained and it provides excellent obstacle trails for mountain biking. Nice areas all around with kayaking, canoeing and paddle boating available for rent. Gazebos available for picnics, and sone areas even have bike pumps. Some areas are very peaceful with wonderful views. Highly recommended and will certainly be back.
We needed a place to camp for the night and Pocahants State park was perfect. Upon arrival I met Blake, who checked me in and was so kind and personable. We drove through to our pull-through site, which was asphalt and level and provided water and electric. There was also a picnic table, fire pit, and blocked off gravel tent area. All the sites had plenty of space between sites so you’re not right next to your neighbor. They also had a few sites that would be great for two or three families wanting to camp together. While we weren’t able to have a fire due to high winds, they sell firewood cut from trees that have fallen in the park. All proceeds go back into the park. There are several restrooms, all clean, and many playgrounds. They have great hiking and bike trails that are all well maintained. While we only stayed the night, we will be making reservations next spring to stay longer. One of the best maintained state parks we’ve been to.
We camped 16 times on 2023 and this campground is one of our top 5 stops! We actually visited AFTER the water park was closed (9/8-9/10). There so much ground to cover whether you are walking or biking. Our son loved playing at the park across from our RV spot. The sites were spaced out really good. We never had any issues with the neighboring campers. I definitely recommend bringing your bikes! We seen deer on one of our rides. But there is ALOT to see. If you're into nature, this is the place. We walked the dogs alot too. They have a museum on site that was fun to visit. The water park is huge and looks amazing. However, we were told it gets very busy since they are open to the public and not just the campers. I thought that was a good piece of information to know. Coming in the cooler months will help with getting overheated on the various trails. We are actually going back March 2024. They have a few camp stores onsite with a good variety of things. We enjoyed Kayaking the area too.
