Forest Road 71: This forest road stretches from the old Somerset airfield to the Kelley Stand Road. Campsites can be found in various spots along the way and along some of the forest roads leading off of Forest Road 71.
There are many general forest areas available on the Green Mountain National Forest for rustic or dispersed camping. These areas provide a place to camp and enjoy nature’s solitude at no charge. Visitors can camp anywhere on the forest unless the area is posted closed to camping. Camp in existing sites or stay the strongly recommended 200 feet from roads, streams, trails, and bodies of water to disperse impact. Do not cut any vegetation. There is a camping limit of 14 days in any 30-day period on the Forest. Please leave the campsites clean by using Leave No Trace Principles, such as carry out what you carry in.
I've been going here since my young adulthood. Camp sites have become smaller and over grown. Many old places non existing now a days. Love the quiet. But needs some more open camp area's
*WARNING*
I went here a couple days ago, 4/14/2023, and it seemed to be completely closed. There was a handmade sign at the dirt road spur that said “ROAD CLOSED RESIDENTS ONLY” but I ignored that and went on to the campsite, where the gate into the site was closed and there were no parking signs all around the outside. If anyone has more information please let me know.
Primitive camping. Vault toilets only. No drinking water sources. Carry in carry out.
Be bear safe with your food and mindful that there are few rangers and less medical help. Closest walk in clinic is Brattleboro 90 minutes away.
Whith all that said... Unmatched beauty. 3 miles from Somerset lake.
Free camping is hard to come by, but this place is it. It's off the beaten path. Abt 10 miles of dirt road off Rt 9. 14 day limit on camping. Donation welcome. Environmental Police come by abt once a day. No on site water, but there is a spring just up the road. In closed porta potty buildings. Bring a generator for if yr powering a camper. Hiking trails, swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, cooking grills at the Reservoir. Beautiful area. Great place to take the family. Love this place, have been going for many years.
We come here 3 to 4 times a year from May through September. Many hiking trails and serene moments.
