Dispersed camping is also allowed on the Pawnee National Grassland, year-round. This provides an alternative to campground camping for those who want to experience the grassland the way people did in the past. No fee required. A Motor Vehicle Use Map will help you determine if you are on private or public land.
Camped here for the first time and loved it. There are primitive camp sites where you pretty much park and setup camp.
However Pawnee allows you to park and camp anywhere you want. So peaceful and you can hear a pin drop. At night the sky is amazing and you will see shooting stars.
Highly recommend camp area and I can't wait to return.
There's nothing "dispersed" about this camping. You will be right on top of another person's camp, within earshot. Oh, and there's only about a dozen spots, so good luck finding one after you've prepared all afternoon and driven two hours to get there. I didn't even get to set foot on ground. Turned around immediately.
Lots of cactus but most of the sites are cleared of them. Sites are far apart with vault toilet at the trail head parking lot. Amazing views of the grasslands and the Pawnee Buttes
Absolutely beautiful area, but the exact spot marked on Google Maps for dispersed camping as of 4/2023 is not accessible by vehicle anymore. As another reviewer stated, this road is now blocked by a wooden fence with posted signage (visited in person 4/2023) Still plenty of other established dispersed spots in the area, but this particular one appears to be closed for good. Regardless, the area is beautiful. If all the spots are full, find your own. It's called dispersed for a reason. Make sure to follow the MVUM to see where dispersed is allowed and where it's not before picking your landing place for the evening.
