Favorite to many, the campground is centered to various waterfalls, as well as other sightseeing attractions, including boat tours and visits to Grand Island. Recreation Fishing in Lake Superior is best by boat. There is no access to the lake at Bay Furnace, but there is a boat ramp approximately 10 miles west, at AuTrain, and in Munising. Oh wow this is a cool place! The campground is right on Lake Superior and campsites 8 and 10 I think are right on the water. I stayed at 4 which was nice, it was really surprisingly private! Couldn’t really see the road or any other sites which was nice.
I came the first weekend in October and all the sites were first come first serve at that point. I arrived early in the day (about 1 or 2 I think) and there were only a handful of sites available at that time.
It’s pretty quiet, there’s a nice picnic table area looking over the lake and it’s a good, open spot for northern lights if you’re trying to see them. There’s a lot of walkable shoreline and the water is beautiful of course. The Bay Furnace ruins are cool too! Definitely worth walking the two minutes down the road to see. There’s some nice signage explaining what the furnace is and it’s a very pretty albeit small building.
Had this campground set as our destination but decided to push our arrival a day later since we were hoping to land a non-reservable (first-come first-serve) site and arriving late afternoon. When we did finally arrive we saw a sign at the entrance stating it was full. Decided to drive through anyway and happened across a family that was just about to leave a non-reservable site and they offered it to us. Not right on the water but still a good view. They have pit toilets along with fresh water and a dump station - sorry no electric hookup. The only negative I have is that most of the sites, ours included, are laid out with the fire pit on the opposite side of our camper’s entrance. Otherwise this is another nice National Forest campground.
We love to visit Bay Furnace any time we're in Munising. This visit we opted to visit the day use/picnic area right around sunset in hopes of a clear sky and maybe to catch a glimpse of the Perseids. What a great view of Grand Island as we passed by last light. It took a while for the light to subside enough to start getting views of the stars. But before 11pm we were rewarded with a view of the Milky Way and we captured some meteors in the handful of long exposure shots I took!
I wanted to take my girlfriend to Pictured Rocks. Decided to just head out to this campground Thursday at a shot in the dark with it being fairly close to things we wanted to do for the weekend. The campground did not disappoint at all. First of all, I've got to say the sites are in such well kept conditions. All of them had nice space and great ground conditions. Second of all, the bathrooms! Probably the best I've seen on a campground. Could go to the bathroom without feeling disgusted.
The cleanliness of the campground is 10/10. It's beautiful. Enjoyed the little "beaches" that we had of you follow a trail from the campsite we were staying at (19).
Enjoyed everything about our stay. Everyone was very nice.. quite and respectful. Will certainly recommend this to anyone looking for a campground in the area. Make sure you show up at a decent time and get you a campsite if you're doing a first come first serve.
Great experience!
Very nice sites for different size set ups. I wouldn't recommend large class A or large 5th wheels due to size. There are 2 sites on the lake, but there is beach access not far from the sites. It is a nicely wooded area for most sites. It has a dump station with drinking water to fill with. There is no electric or water hook ups at sites. You can use a generator from 6 am to 10 pm. if needed. There is a small historic area at the beach area to the right that is neat. We really enjoyed our stay twice here.
