At roughly 60,000 acres, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan’s largest state park. It is home to 35,000 acre old-growth forest, roaring waterfalls, miles of rivers and streams, more than 90 miles of hiking trails, the Lake Superior shoreline and vistas unrivaled anywhere in the Midwest.
The eastside of the park is located on CR-107 - 18 miles west of Ontonagon, 20 miles north of Lake Gogebic, and 50 miles east of Ironwood. From Hwy 2/M-28 take M-64 north approximately 17 miles to CR107, turn west and drive about 3 miles to the park. From M-38 head west into Ontonagon, continue for approximately 18 miles to the park.
Loved the Porkies - how well it is maintained . The summit peak trail is a little strenuous for the stairs and uphill hike. The Lake of the clouds overlook is really breathtaking. Enjoyed our hike at this state park so much! Shall come back again🙂
Breathtaking views, excellent hiking trails, should be a national park, in my opinion! The friends of the Porkies are a huge asset to this park! Our family stayed at the Union Bay campground and loved it! (Aside from the bugs). The activity director was so knowledgeable about the park and we loved participating in archery!!! We strongly recommend hiking around the river and seeing the 3 waterfalls at Presque Isle and then enjoying a dip in Lake Superior!!!
Beautiful state park. The campground was very nice. The restrooms were clean and they were even checking them around midnight when we were taking showers. The lakefront sites were beautiful to see the sunsets. We were at the back of the campground but just a quick walk to view it. The state park itself was magnificent. Would highly recommend coming here. The mosquitoes are huge and hungry, the only thing I wish would have been different.
What an amazing experience! Such a beautiful State Park! We saw waterfalls that were stunning! Awesome boardwalks along with paved and gravel trails. Make sure you bring insect repellent. We are looking forward to going back in Autumn.
