We had a magical family vacation at Zapata. The staff, programs, food and setting are amazing. Highlights were riding through the Great Sand Dunes National Park, exploring the Medano ranch on horseback, fly fishing, encountering so much wildlife (bison, elk , deer, coyote, even pelicans) and hiking to Zapata Falls. Highly recommended!

Let me tell you about Zapata ranch. First off, I had to find it just by randomly clicking around on Google maps. I looked at the reviews and most of them were for the falls or campgrounds, which are not the same thing. Then I saw the rooms and wasn't overly impressed. But then my wife saw that the food was included, we were sold.

We went in with not a ton of information and low expectations, but at least we would be fed. Let me tell you what. This place is wonderful! The room was fine, not much to talk about. But, the food was amazing. Eating a 5 course meal outside in the mountain air is an amazing experience. The location is perfect. Easy to find and yet secluded and open. They have a little trail that leads to a bench where you can watch the sun set. On top of this, the great sand dunes national park is just minutes away.

If you're going to the park this is THE place to stay.

We spent Harvest Weekend at the ranch and had an absolutely flawless experience from start to finish.

The staff was kind, knowledgeable and accommodating. The rooms are cute and the food was outstanding. I can’t wait to come back for Harvest Weekend next year and I suggest you do the same.

My wife and I went to Zapata for our honeymoon recently. We stayed there for a full week.

The first thing I was struck by was the friendly, inviting atmosphere of the lodge we were staying at. We were greeted by the Program Director who showed us around and made sure we felt comfortable.

They had champagne and an incredible meal waiting for us in our room.

The next few days we spent horseback riding with our Wrangler/Guide, Jess. Jess was a fantastic wrangler and made sure we got the opportunity to explore and ride how we wanted. She was knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions we had about the area. We were able to gallop, lope and take things at our own pace, no head-to-tail trail riding here!

Overall, the entire ranch had such a home-like feeling. Even the chef, Ivan, came to meet us and we had the pleasure of discussing his cooking. All of the food was delicious and sourced locally.

I would highly recommend staying at Zapata for any occasion, big or small, and giving yourself a chance to really explore that incredible area!

Spent a night here while exploring the Great Sand Dunes area. Wish we could have stayed an extra night! The place is quiet and beautiful, very well kept, intimate, and relaxing. The staff are so attentive and friendly. Food is amazing! And we saw the most gorgeous sunset. Can’t say enough good things about this place.
