On the north side of San Antonio lies a 12,000-acre wilderness that protects the city’s drinking water. You’ll find your own “Recharge Zone” in this vast urban refuge.
Government Canyon State Natural Area offers more than 40 miles of trails. You can also camp, attend a program or guided hike, geocache, picnic, take nature photos and look for birds and other wildlife. Your kids will connect with “natural fun” at our playscape and Discovery Trail.
Reserve one of 23 walk-in tent campsites. We also have two walk-in group tent camps for up to 16 people.
The Natural Area normally allows overnight camping on Fridays and Saturdays only; additional camping nights are available on many holidays. There are regular walk-in (50-60 yards) campsites, and two group walk-in campsites that allow up to 16 persons per site.
I had an incredible experience at this state natural area! The highlight for me was the fascinating dinosaur tracks, which were a major draw for crowds, and they did not disappoint. The hiking trails were not only beautiful but also quite manageable, making it a perfect outing for a Saturday.
What truly impressed me was the low crowd level, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the natural beauty and history of this place. I kind of figured there would be an elevated level of crowd because of the nice weather, but I was thankfully wrong.
Five stars all the way.
Great place to hike with friends and family. There is an entrance fee to this beautiful park. Make sure you go the restroom and take some snacks and drinks. The trails are different from one another. Make sure you wear proper shoes and clothing depending on weather.
What's there to not love about nature? Government Canyon State Park is great if one loves hiking and exploring. Getting to the dinosaur tracks is about 4 miles in, it's worth the effort. And the house that sits further down the trail is great to see. I will return for another visit.
Good family hike for family with kids from 7 year old to 13 years old. Did Dino tracks and the overlook. Total miles were 6.7 and walking time was 3 hours. Stopped at tracks and had picnic. Beautiful hike. Overlook has no rail, so definitely cautious with kids.
Nice place with a lot of options for hiking. We went to see dinosaur tracks. The hike is about 2.5 miles one way, 5 miles all together, it's not difficult at all the only thing is that there are a lot of rocks on the trail, u need to pay attention to your steps and sturdy shoes are a must. There are benches along the way, and once you arrive at the destination. We spent a good amount of time looking at the dinosaur tracks... It is so cool to see it, and the more you look at it the more details you see .
