Retreat to relax at Chuckanut Hills Farm and Campground, a 20-acre energy-regenerative, off-grid family farm nestled at the foot of Anderson Mountain and surrounded by thousands of acres of forest. 30 minutes south of Bellingham in the Chuckanut Mountains, the only finger of the Cascade Mountain Range that reaches all the way to the Salish Sea. These hills were the native home of the Saquantch people - a Salish coast tribe that fished and hunted the mountains surrounding Lake Whatcom. They lived in long lodge homes and were later pushed out by the invading Lummi Tribe. The Lummi Tribe was later pushed out by Western logging companies, and the entire mountainous region was logged aggressively for a number of years. Where our farm now rests was once the second of many logging camps built by Ed English. The gravel logging road you take to get to our farm as cut in 1900, and a railroad ran through the lower part of our property, taking logs from Lake Whatcom down to the boom town of Seattle. Our intention while being the current caretakers of this ancestral land is to restore native plants, raise heirloom produce and heritage animals, and provide a restful nature paradise for people looking to spend time in the outdoors.
Our 122-year old gravel logging road is peppered with old-fashioned country speed bumps, so plan to drive slow and ease around them. Vehicles of all sizes ranging from semi-trucks to Teslas to little hybrids have traversed our road without trouble.
There are no streetlights and it will be QUITE dark if you arrive after sunset; arrive during daylight hours if at all possible! We don't necessarily mind after-hours arrivals, but we are in bed early and will not be on hand to help with parking/directing you to your site so you will be fully on your own.
Some GPS maps try to take you past our gate - watch closely on your right-hand side for our farm gate with the numbers 3735 and a HipCamp sign. We are exactly two miles down the gravel road, on the right-hand side.
Campers: Proceed through our gate and immediately look for an open camp site (each site has a fire pit and a picnic table), or if you asked for a specific site go ahead and choose that one. Do NOT drive up the steep driveway.
Glampers ONLY: continue driving directly up the steep driveway. There will be a parking area immediately to your right with an orange traffic cone marking your parking spot. Once you park and unload, walk up the hill following the chain of traffic cones. The tent will be visible on your right as you come through the trees.
Everyone: The sauna cabin, which houses the shower/restroom for all campers as well as the sauna, is a small building up the hill past the house. It looks like a little house on the hill!
