Loved it. 1st float with our 7 year old. We did the all day one. Bus drivers are super friendly. Plenty of tubes available. Awesome camp site.

We enjoyed our stay at Camp Tomahawk. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The bath house and restrooms are very clean. The James river is a gentle river and perfect for inexperienced and young floaters. The river scenery is beautiful and we saw two bald eagles flying over the river. Great experience, definitely coming back.

I was here for an event 7/6-7-10. What a great place! There is plenty of room to wander. The scenery is great with the river against the echoing bluffs. I sat out one morning watching three whitetails feeding along a ridge, and welcomed the neighboring cows waking me up every morning. Hope to be back next year!

Super Fantastic!! Family Friendly! Amazingly Affordable!

This was absolutely the best camping experience our family of 5 has had.

The bathrooms and showers were surprisingly clean even during a holiday weekend! There were port-a-potties scattered throughout the campground. Campers were friendly (always waving when driving by). There is a washer and dryer in the bathhouse if needed. We had a miscommunication about electricity for our site, but it was not the campground, but our group that we camped with that the miscommunication was with. We discovered that you can actually tent camp without electricity and had an awesome time (We just bought a solar powered phone charger). Cell service is about 1 bar to non-existent. Great for unplugging and enjoying time with family. We were next to the river and had partial shade. My children ran all over the property, and I only saw 3 mosquitoes and 2 ticks the whole 5 days we camped (we used repellent). It was such a great time with family. We met the owner, and he was incredibly friendly and helpful. We did go tubing, and it was so much fun. The staff was great. The tubes can be tethered together, and they offer cooler floats. The general store is like a little oasis. There is so much to offer!

There are some things you should know:

The shower-house is two stalls in one room that can be locked. If you go during peak hours, you will probably wait in a line for a shower (but the river is always available for bathing). The gravel road to the riverside campsites from the bathhouse takes about 5 minutes to drive (10 mph), and about 20 or so minutes to walk depending on how far your site is. Stay out of the tall grass (seems obvious, but some people learn the hard way). This is the woods, there are chiggers, poison ivy and snakes... Popular port a potties do get full. We were there with a group of about 200 or more, and we were scattered throughout the RV and tent sites. I think it was the first time with a bigger group on a national holiday and there was just not enough time in the day. We live, and we learn, and we can all show a little patience in such circumstances.
