The lakes are set in a spectacular high alpine valley, close to the top of Ebbetts Pass at an elevation of 8,600 feet. These two lakes are unique in that they are headwaters for two different watersheds: the eastern lake flows into the Mokelumne River drainage, while the western lake flows into the Stanislaus River drainage. Maximum boat speed on both lakes is 5 mph, and gas powered motors are discouraged. Highland Lakes visitors enjoy camping, hiking and horseback riding.
From Arnold, CA, take State Route 4 east 40.8 miles to Highland Lakes sign. Turn right after sign and go 4.9 miles to "Y" intersection. Bear right and go 0.7 miles to campground. Note: After Lake Alpine, State Route 4 becomes a narrow road with a 24% grade and lots of curves. Not recommended for vehicles over 25' in length. Last 4.7 miles is on rough, rocky dirt road.
My wife and I absolutely love this place!! 2nd year coming up for our Anniversary, and we definitely will be back again. Not much in the way of amenities, just vault toilets and a hand pump water stanchion, but that's part of the charm, it's very basic, close to nature. The lakes are lovely and even this late in summer (last weekend of August) are still full. There is plenty of hiking and fishing, and the best part, it's almost always quiet, with the sounds of nature taking front stage.
The campground host is a thief. He stole my expensive fly rod.
He is an authoritarian creep. Do not be fooled by his charm, a true monster who should not be representing the USFS.
This is premier Alpine camping at it's best. There are no reservations it is first come first serve camping that is $12 a night with two vehicle max per space.
The drive is very straight foward and easy to find. 9nce you turn off of Hyw 4 on to Highland lakes road it is a very nice drive. I would recommend the use of a touch because you have to cross a small stream and the road is dirt and rock do expect rough spots.
Highland lakes campground is a gem. The views were spectacular. We went the end of Aug. so the temp was a high of 80 and a low of 50, very pleasant weather but make sure to pack a long sleeve shirt because the wind picks up at about 3pm and lasts tell about 6pm. The mosquitos were plentiful so bring insect repellent. The sites were very clean, there is a vault toilet and you can pump your own water, but the water is not potable unless treated.
Upper and lower highland lake are shallow but there are fish. Think your best luck would be to fish from a floater. If you do not want to fish then go hiking. This is a literal hikers paradise that has trails for all ages and abilities. If you are feeling brave then I would suggest hiking to Hiram Peak. It has great views and is worth the effort.
Do yourself a favor get out and experience what Highland Lakes has to offer.
First come first serve camping.
Nicely maintained pit toilets, hand pump well water available.
Another fine California campground. Pls enjoy!
