No reservations. $14 per night. 6 designated sites. Across the highway from Wahweap South Entrance. Picnic table at each site. No hookups, dump station, or restrooms. Pack it in, pack it out. Portable toilets required. No campfires or glass containers. Three night camping limit.
From Carl Hayden Visitor Center: turn right, north on Hwy 89. After less than half a mile, even before the Wahweap South entrance, turn left onto an unmarked dirt road. Bear right after the cattle guard, then you will see the campground sign with regulations.
Lots of parking and there’s a nice trail on the left side of the parking lot (left across the road) that is clearly marked with two lines of well-placed rocks. We came here and spent 1 hour walking and taking photos of the cool wave / rock formations. This place is a “hidden gem”- not crowded and still undiscovered in my opinion. We didn’t have to get a lottery permit or pay anything to park here during the daytime (we do own an annual national park pass but it‘a not required).
Perfect spot to set up shop right outside of town. Nice hike a few hundred feet away.
Nice easy access and close to highway. NO SHADE.
The New Wave Trail is next to it.
No toilets, no service, no security.
We did not reserve the place - there are only 8 spots. But we found a spot near this campground. It was a very wild, safe, and nice spot to spend a night, see the sunrise, and hike around.
