Located in far eastern Arizona, 11 miles south of St. Johns, and 18 miles north of Springerville-Eagar, on US Highways 180 & 191.
Nice clean well maintained due primarily to prison labor. A few great hiking trails around the camp, especially the Petroglyphs. Lake is low but still nice for boating and playing in the water. A few really nice camp spaces (16) and some not much. Spaces 18,19, 20 are pull through FHU sites that are on the side of a hill so bring plenty of blocks. The other FHU pull throughs are reasonably level. Most of the other sites are ok unless you have a long wheel base motorhome, so be prepared. Ramadas are nice but some are turned to an odd angle giving you a view of your neighbors rv instead of the lake. Some fire rings are really to close to the next RV. So if you have a problem with sparks on awnings or paint you may want to study Google sat maps before choosing a site. Although there are plenty of great tent camping sites don't be surprised when you can't get a 50 amp site for your Rv because a tent camper has it. There are no restrictions on camp site use. Cell service is good for voice but can be spotty for streaming. A cell booster really helps.
Even with a few faults it's still worth a visit. This was our second. I think you will enjoy your stay.
Nice little spot with good parking and camp sites. Lake is ok, nice for littler kids because shore goes out very far into water. Shallow a good ways in. Nice clean bath rooms and showers if you camp for extended time. We come here twice a year! Never too crowded especially if you come from city lakes like Lake pleasant. Good change of pace here!
One of the best camping sites in Arizona. Near to town Saint Johns, very well connected to Show Low, Payson. The camping site surrounded by beautiful lake. Huge Ramada at the center, equipped with electricity. Standing campfire spot at the center. Enough benches to sit across the park. Bathrooms are neat and clean. There are cabins for rent and the open spots everywhere. Enough hiking trails nearby, the petroglyphs trail is very beautiful and historical. Watching sunset and sunrise is a treat. We did overnight camping, cooked food there, enjoyed kayaking, fishing and campfire. Keep in mind the weather get really cold n windy there during the night so plan accordingly.
We rented a cabin and it was very clean and comfortable sleeping. No table but a counter along the wall and 2 stools. Has AC/heat and ceiling fans. Loved the lake. Didn't catch any fish but they were showing up on the depth finder. The rangers are super friendly and helpful. The park is very well kept.
Absolutely beautiful scenery. Cabin was very clean and worked well. No running water in the cabin but the showers and bathrooms weren't too far from our cabin. There was a water spigot across the walk from my cabin so I could still use water. The shop was well maintained and stocked. The rangers were friendly and Informative. The showers and bathrooms were cleaned every morning but checked every two hours to make sure they were kept up. So great job with that guys. The water was crisp which was great to get away from the heat of the day.
