When early settlers ventured up Mount Graham, the Arcadia area was usually as far as they got on the first day. A little later in the history of the Pinaleños, Arcadia was the site of one of several Civilian Conservation Corps camps established in the 1930s to provide jobs for workers idled by the Great Depression. Today, Arcadia Campground, which has 19 campsites, is the first campground visitors encounter on their way up Mount Graham by way of the Swift Trail (AZ 366), which was built by those Depression-era workers. Arcadia Campground is shaded by stands of tall ponderosa pine interspersed with Gambel oaks and Arizona walnuts. Such a diverse habitat makes this an excellent area for bird watching. Watch for poison ivy. Note: Black bear area.
From Safford drive south 8 miles on US 191 to AZ 366. Turn right (southwest) onto AZ 366 and drive 11.6 miles to the campground entrance on the right side of the road. Check local road conditions during winter months.
Awesome place! It was my first time going, the camp sites were very clean! The bathrooms were fairly clean!
First, if you have a long vehicle or are towing, you might NOT want to head up the Coronado Nat'l Forest road. It's extremely tight, with a lot of switchbacks. The first hint should have been where, on our map, it said the road it closed in winter.
Second, the campground is completely surrounded by the road. It's a small campground, but does have pit toilets. In the upper part of the campground, you can get water. No electric, though.
We would have liked to have gone further up the road, but not in our rig. Lots of history up there.
Nice 4th of July long weekend gateaway, very quite, piece, green and love the weather get some hails love the island skis views, definitely will bak. Driving from Chandler towards globe, then Safford next mount Graham
Loved this place. Very secluded. Lots of beautiful trees. The road to camp is quite fun.
