Nice and quiet, I was the only camper. There was a flush toilets and potable water (no hookups). Next door was a 3/4 mile track around the cool lake.
No camp host and no fees.
Update - no longer free. they've made it difficult to pay
A previous post said lake is devoid of fish. I'm from Tucson but I met two elderly gentlemen walking their dog on the .6 mile perimeter trail around the lake. They were long term residents and this is their hometown (Kearny) and they said attepts to stock the lake over the years have all ended with the fish dying off. Attempts to figure out why have failed. Either some species of toxic algae or else something toxic in the soil. But no one knows for sure these guys said. We noted the ducks seem to thrive.
Enough on the lake. There is a nice campground. It's for dry camping only. There is a table and a grill at each site plus two outhouses on the property. Campsites are $10.00. I like the drive from Tucson to Winkleman, Hayden, Kearny, Kelvin and Superior. This hilly and mountainous drive is full of Saguaro cactus "forests" marching up the hills. There is much much more to see. This to me is quintessential or iconic Arizona scenery. Oh, I could have given 5 stars but I gave 4 as I came to fish. Was I fair not to give 5? I'm still wrestling with that decision . . .
Peaceful place. Ducks are beautiful to watch..easy to find. Signs are newer.
Very beautiful place and great place to get away to. We went as a family and with our dogs and had a great time. Can’t wait to go back. Currently no fish but can use a non motor boat on it.
