The Sunset Reef Campground, located off the Washington Ranch Road, is a reclaimed well pad with 11 developed campsites; five RV spaces and six tent sites. Each site has a covered picnic table and grill for your camping convenience with a vault toilet on site. Visitors can dry camp in the area for a maximum of five nights for free.
Perfect place to boondock. It was a bit windy when we were there but perfect location if you are wanting to visit Carlsbad Caverns. Highly recommend. Just take it easy on the dirt road coming in.
For a BML place to stay for free, this is nice. It is fenced to keep the cows out. It is not very big. It has a nice pit toilet, and if you are lucky enough to get a camp spot, it has covered picnic tables, fire pits, and trash cans at each site. Several tent sites are also available.
Very nice BLM campground. Quiet and peaceful. Center sites have patios with cover, picnic tables, and fire rings. Camping along the outside edge on the fence line gives you the gorgeous views of the Guadalupe Mountains to the west and the Carlsbad Caverns Visitor Center to the north. Rock-lines fire rings on the outside fence line for campers wanting the view. Garbage cans and a put toilet for those that need it. And it's free with. 5 day maximum stay. Spots all filled up in the evening each week night in mid February.
