Reservations not required, but helpful. They are about 9 miles from the casino, so you book at the casino (or call the casino). Then you must check in at the casino to get your "tags" for your dashboard and campsite. Then you drive to the campground and call the casino back to let them know what space you are in.
If you like boondock camping this is a great place. The road in is car accessible. Right on the shores of Lake Superior, bear and wolf sightings are not uncommon. Pack in and pack out. No facilities at the campground.
My stay here couldn't be any better.
This campground doesn't have electricity or water and you have to drive on dirt road, but it is worth it. W
I camped right at the edge of the cliff. In the morning I could see bald eagle catching fish and lots of beautiful scene. I loved it.
"Rustic" is an appropriate term. There is no water or electricity, just a latrine. It is difficult to get to the lakeshore but it's not very far. I like these remote sorts of campsites but a major drawback was that the dirt road that "loops" around the site has major ruts in it and you must drive very carefully. I was thankful to find this site during Labor Day weekend, when all other sites were full -- you are certain to grab a spot.
I attach this picture just as a warning -- there is a large hornet nest on the far end of the curve at the campsite I stayed. I never noticed until hearing faint clicking noises. If you see a site with a small patch of trees in front, I would avoid it. But, otherwise, yeah, if you like rustic camping I would recommend this spot.
Great campground. No posted rules but most campers are respectful of noise and appropriate quiet hours. I had service at our campsite. The campsites are very close to Lake Superior. No swimming access, which is not disappointing considering we went swimming in the Lake in August and it took my breath away, ice cold! Outhouse only central to campsites. Wood can be bought in nearby towns: Bayfield, Herbster, etc. No large cities nearby. Campsites seem well maintained.
