Follow the Cave Creek Trail until you reach the Pinhoti connector, and hang a right to take the Pinhoti Trail northbound. Look for a sign that points to McDill overlook, and follow a side trail for the last quarter mile. Along this side trail you’ll pass the wreckage of a small plane that supposedly crashed back in 1972. Look for blue and white pieces of the plane off the trail to your right. Keep going and you’ll eventually come to a campsite that would comfortably fit 3 or 4 tents, only about 100 yards shy of the overlook. Camping in this area is a great option because you’re close to the cliffs, but protected from the wind. There are also a few spots right at the cliffs that are big enough for a small tent or hammocks and have better views, but are a bit breezier. The boulder cliffs are an awesome place to hang out at sunset or for stargazing, just remember to keep a headlamp on you!
Beautiful trailhead. Gorgeous view. Very difficult trail. Don't go it alone in case you slip and fall.
The Pinhoti trail is a quite enjoyable hike. My group hiked over 10 steep miles, mostly on this trail. Definitely worth the trip. I would strongly suggest this trail to anyone who likes hiking.
The Pinhoti Trail is beautiful! There was a misty rain that say, so several of our party cancelled, but it was like being in the clouds. ALWAYS go hiking in the rain! 🌧️
Qualify anything I say as coming from an occasional hiker coming from the RV campground, not a serious hiker.
I like the trail, but I prefer the trails in state park. The state park trails have more traffic and so they are easier to follow, plus they are marked better in my opinion. The national park trails are not as readily marked and sometimes you come to side trails that are not on the map, but are clearly well traveled. I might enjoy the side trail, but I don’t know where it goes.
There is an intersection at the Blue Mountain shelter. A trail leads off from that intersection that is not marked that we followed over into Cheaha State Park trail system. It was a nice loop from the boardwalk that should be shown on maps to encourage use.
