For longer stays at Red Hills State Park, there are more than 100 Class A campsites with vehicular access that provide electricity, a sanitary dump station, water and access to a modern handicapped-accessible building with showers and flush toilets. Some sites are pull-through with 50 amp service.
Located in Lawrence County on US Rt #50 between Olney and Lawrenceville near the town of Sumner. From US Rt #41 at Vincennes, Indiana, the park is located 18 miles west on Rt. 50. From the junction of I-57 and Rt. 50 at Salem the park is located 65 miles east. From the junction of IL Rt 1 and Rt. 50 at Lawrenceville the park is 8 miles west. From Chicago take I-57 to Mattoon. Go east on Rt. 16 to Charleston, then take Rt. 130 south to Olney, and travel east on Rt. 50 to the park.
I love nature parks this is a decent one.
Red Hills State Park is right off of Highway 50 in Lawrence County IL. It has one main trail that is split into three or four named sections. It has camping areas around the lake in the southern section ot the park and a few picnic areas in the northern section of the park. The road in the northern section is rough and the trail is difficult to follow in some places but the "scenic view" is amazing. There is a nearly two mile loop trail in the park, most of which is clear. You can't hear the Highway from inside the park, and the forests are lovely. It's cleaner than most parks I've been to in Southern IL including other state parks. Would go again and will.
Red Hills State park needs to really get the reservation signs up. I had a shelter reserved today but another group was there. I'm not very pleased with the situation. The people that used the shelter were very nice and paid me .
A hidden gem just off of US 50. It is a wonderful park, with lots of picnic tables for that afternoon outing, with a beautiful lake and woods. Camping, hiking and fishing opportunities galore.
We booked a camp site ahead of time and there was an issue with a double booking when we arrived. The camp host and local IDNR officer immediately got me another site that was better than the one I had booked and offered me a refund but I declined. They were friendly and helpful. The showers and bathrooms were nice and clean for a state park. I recommend this park for families or people just looking for a getaway.
We always like to stay at Red Hill State Park when we want to camp closer to home. The camp spots are mostly spacious with our 34ft trailer, 2 slide outs and canapy. Some spots are tight with trees too close for my comfort, so I know which ones we will fit in and have those written down in my notes.
The campground is nice and the people are respectful towards each other. Very kid friendly and the water is beautiful. Just wish they had a beach area..
