If you’re traveling with a larger group, family, or organization, Devil’s Lake State Park has you covered with their Group Campsites located on the South Shore. There are 8 sites available that can accommodate 20 to 60 campers, depending on the site.
The park’s group camp facilities feature modern showers and restrooms, and the location is conveniently located about a 15-minute walk via the Group Camp Trail to the South Shore day-use area and beach. Climbing groups will also appreciate the location, which is situated at the head of the CCC trail.
I'm reluctant to review this site because it's such a gem that I don't want it to be overrun. Sure, there's raccoons at night but this is their home, not yours, and keeping food and toiletries out of your tent will avert any problems. The area is generally super quiet at night, especially compared to the North Shore campground which has over 400 camping sites. The bird noises referred to in another review are Great Blue Herons that nest in the trees in the middle of the group site. If there guttural squawking bothers you then you're better off staying in a motel! Hiking up a 500 bluff and from there it's ~ a 5 mile hike around the lake. Best of all: there's little or no cell service at this site!
Great sites for about 15-20 people. We had 8 tents on our site and still room for more. Only issue we had is the traffic getting to the group site. It was Memorial weekend and the Northshore was at full capacity and they sent everyone to the South side. Too many people needed park stickers. Some bathrooms have been upgraded and all were clean.
The group camp has well sized campsites for large groups. There’s space for lots of tents, and each site has around 4 picnic tables and a fire pit. The campsites are spaced a good distance apart so that you mostly do not see other groups from your site. They are mostly dirt and surrounded by forest. There are parking spots for around 6 cars available at each campsite.
Make sure you lock up and store away all of your food because there are raccoons which will get to it. 😅
We have been coming to the devils lake group campsite for close to 20 years now. It is really amazing but unfortunately there are a few things that need to be worked on. First of all there are about 10 or 12 lots there that need to be reserved about 12 months in advance. Lot number one is the largest that holds about 50 people. That’s two through 12 whole 25. They are all amazing and great but don’t have any water or electricity. There is one set of showers in the center. This is honestly the biggest problem, the toilet area and showers are always very dirty. Not cleaned very often. It would really be nice if they would be cleaned more often.
