If you're considering doing the traverse, before you've climbed the standard needle route, don't. You will miss the cross over and end up coming down the West Gulley back to cottonwood lake which is not fun. They recently updated the class of the standard route up the needle to class four, be prepared.
One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever had the pleasure of hiking
After hiking the crestone traverse, I came down from the needle. Route finding from this direction was difficult so pay attention on the way up. Lost the official trail several times due to false cairns so I pretty much had to make my own route.
This is the perfect spot to take 3+ days and enjoy all this area has to offer. Several campsites for backpackers. Set up camp and begin exploring some amazing 14ers, lakes, a wide variety of wildlife. Weather is a concern, so be prepared and check your forecasts.
