What a sweet find! Want to do something different? Come over to Chunky River Recreation. Bring your camp gear, rent one of their kayaks/canoes, throw your gear in and row down the river to set up camp! We found a beautiful sandy beach halfway down river between our launch area and our pickup point. Talk about getting away for the weekend! There's no road access to these beaches and they're perfect for camp setups! Plenty of small wildlife and views to enjoy all long the Chunky River. It's perfect for the whole family.
We unfortunately went when the river was low so at a lot of points we had to get off the canoe and walk it past the rocky low points. Nevertheless, it didn't keep us from having a heck of a time! Tip: call ahead and ask about the river flow and balance you canoe when packing it with gear to avoid it flipping down river.
Wayne did a great job explaining details of the float. Water levels are critical here. USGS level today was 2.9 feet. There are at least 12 rapids. We hit bottom on several, and pushed ourselves until freed. 3.2 to 3.5 feet is probably ideal. The scenery is fantastic. Wayne is a hoot, and a great conversationalist.
Would have rated the trip at 5-stars, but the end point at Stuckey Bridge was washed out. Had to carry the kayaks up a steep embankment. Be sure to ask Wayne about put in and take out requirements.
Had a great time today kayaking with Wayne and his folks. Could not ask for nicer people or better set up. Very accommodating and super friendly. They can accommodate parties of any size. We floated with abou 15 people and the group before us was only about 5. Same service for both groups. We will definitely be back.
Best campground I have ever stayed in. The owners, and their friends will go out of their way to help you if you need help with anything. Small country town atmosphere with a lot of history. Chunky provides a refreshing dip or rent a canoe. Convenient to Meridian and Newton and interstate 20 east and west. Super people and a great place. Five stars!
