Steamboat Springs is one of the more niche sections of Colorado, famous to enthusiasts more than tourists. Home to Big Agnes (the brand and the mountain), this is part ski town, part hiker checklist.
Like much of Colorado, camping is abundant and often free. The best camping near Steamboat Springs is in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area, which basically encompasses everything east of Steamboat Springs, CO. With more peaks than you know what to do with, you can choose your campgrounds around which mountain you plan to summit the next day. RV campers will be pleased to know that the Parks Ranger District and Teal Lake areas have RV-compatible campsites.
