A fantastic camping and hiking area that's only a short drive from Steamboat Springs. The dispersed camping areas are free and spread out across the mountainside, there's no bathrooms or amenities but they're incredible! It's a long rough road to get up the pass, don't attempt without four wheel drive and a car with a high clearance.
Mountain views are amazing and it's very colorful in fall time. I also found moose on my way to Buffalo Pass.
Also, I did make it there in a 2wd vehicle but it was very hard on my way back (getting there was easy). 4wd is not needed but high clearance vehicle is definitely needed.
If you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, this Steamboat Springs day-trip is a lot of fun! The views are stunning and the road to the top of the mountain is rugged. The only down-side? No buffalo… 😂
This is one of our favorite summer activities - we spend a day driving up across the pass to Fish Creek Reservoir and hike. The road is county maintained for the first 3 miles, then it gradually deteriorates. You can’t have a low clearance vehicle and you need to have good tires, but 4x4 isn’t necessary unless it’s rained quite a bit. The scenery is spectacular, and generally you won’t see many people, which is ideal to me. We usually pack a lunch and eat up top where it’s about 20 degrees cooler than in town.
