The town of Brule is located in Douglas County on US Highway 2 between Superior and Ashland. To get to the Brule River State Forest headquarters go south on Ranger Road, which is located just west of town on Highway 2. The campground is located one mile south of highway 2 on Ranger Road.
Very peaceful campsites nestled among one of the best rivers for paddling in the state. Pit toilets are kept clean, no showers are on site but after a day of swimming in the river or Lake Superior who needs one. Duluth and Bayfield are small little trips from here and add to the fun.
My husband and I came here with our boys. Our campsite was a little rocky but otherwise a great location. There is a canoe pick up/drop off site here so it's pretty busy by means of traffic. The river was quite shallow and we had a great time walking it with our kids. You're not supposed to have glass on the river but I pulled several handfuls worth of broken bottle pieces from the short 150-200 yard stretch we explored. I highly recommend wearing water shoes if you plan to do any river walking.
Great river sites a stone's throw from the water. Quiet campground, brand new pit toilets as of this review.
Beautiful setting, campsites are nestled in a forest of tall pines. Campsites are very nice, level, with fire Rings, cooking grates, picnic table, and a rustic bench near the fire pit. Pit toilets are very clean and tolerable. The campsite includes a lovely picnic area next to the river, with picnic tables grills and a fire ring with benches. There is a canoe landing at the picnic area, with a platform for watching the river or fishing, as well as an excellent Landing for canoes and kayaks. The ranger station is just down the road from the campsite, and there is a wonderful Artesian well head for water. The Personnel at the ranger station are very nice. All of the sites are nice, although campsite number 13 is my favorite. It's a very large and level, with a view of the river.
