From Franklin take US 64 West of Franklin, turn right at the Wayah Bald/LBJ Job Corps directional Sign. Immediately turn at Loafer's Glory's gas station onto Wayah Road for approximately 10 miles and turn right onto FS 711. This will be the first paved road on the right past Wayah Gap. The distance from this turn off is 1.6 miles from Wayah Gap. It is 4.5 miles to the Wine Spring Horse Camp. From US 19, turn East on Wayah Road (SR 1310) at the Nantahala River Launch Site. Go approximately 12 miles on Wayah Road. Turn left onto FS 711. It is 4.5 miles to the Wine Spring Horse Camp.
Very nice horse camp with bathrooms, not much water close. It could use a well.
Remote, quit, mountainous terrain for sure…would like to bring our horses but better to hear from someone that’s rode recently make sure to blocked trails.
I'm not exactly sure how I would rate a primitive campground. We were there on a cold rainy weekend at the end of October, so needless to say, we were alone. There is a paved forest service road only a couple hundred feet (or less depending on the site you choose), but while we were there, I don't recall seeing or hearing another car. The sites are flat and there are grill/fire pits and picnic tables at each site, and a pit toilet at one end. There are gates at either end that are locked. Call the Forest Service to request a reservation ($10 a night) and get the lock combination. I will say this, make sure you have a flashlight and patience to unlock the gates. I have a small trailer that I pull with my jeep and I am useless backing up, so pull through sites are perfect for me. If you have the chance to camp here in late October, this is a stunning area in Autumn. The colors were beautiful. I live in Western NC, and this is only 20 miles from my home and this is why I moved here from NJ.
