This place was absolutely incredible! I only went for a day hike, but it really felt like a little trip to a different world. If you're looking to get away from the noise of everyday life, Los Burros is a good spot to check out. I hope to go back and spend a night or two. Very peaceful.
Was told on Tuesday Oct. 20th by a Ranger that Los Burros would be open til the end of the month. Plenty of dispersed camping. Drove up Wednesday Oct. 21st to find that the campground was closed on Monday Oct. 19th. Beautiful area. No one around. Awesome. Stayed 4 and a half days. Had a huge Mtn. Lion cross in front of my truck approximately 6 miles before the turn off to Los Burros on the 260 Fall colors were amazing.
This has the potential to be a great campground. During our day visit, it didn't look to be maintained well. The road in the campground was washed out bad and there was trash around the area. There were also some shady characters who looked like they had been there a while, yelling and behaving oddly. The nearby spring and trails were nice, along with the history of the barn and such. Nice sunset views in the meadow to the west.
This trail I will return to again and again. It meanders to different types of forest, you are treated to oak and ponderosa with a bit of juniper and then move into Douglas fir and Aspen. Lots of history as well and the wild horses are such a treat if you're lucky to see one.
Just 38 minutes from ShowLow’s Summit Regional Hospital. Free for two weeks. Each spot has a picnic table and fire ring. Most are spacious. There’s a brick outhouse but no running water. There’s an old Ranger Station, horse barn and corral built in 1909-10. About 200ft or so behind the corral there’s a natural spring (none potable water). The rangers come through now and again. Many friendly people. Horse trails! It’s a two week stay. Totally free. Pack it in, pack it out… no trash service! Several trails, horse friendly! Dogs must be on leash. This is a very nice place well worth the trip. Enjoy!!
- Bring plenty of water. Both drinking water and clean dish washing water, etc!
- Lots and lots of tall pines! Beautiful area. Enjoy!
