This lovely campground is situated on the banks of the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River. Driftwood features 6 campsties and 1 accessible toilet. There is a put-in site for rafting. There is no potable water or garbage service, so please pack your garbage home. Attractions in this area include swimming, non-motorized boating, and fishing. Water levels are low in mid to late summer, which can impede use of boats. The campground provides good access for big game hunting. In addition, the Oriental Trailhead is about 8 miles west, providing access to both OHV and wilderness trails.
From Ukiah, travel west 1 mile to the Hwy 395 junction. Turn left (south) on Hwy 395 and go about 15 miles, and then turn left (east) onto Forest Service Road 55. Drive 5.2 miles east along the North Fork John Day River to Driftwood campground.
We were there on a sunny Saturday afternoon in June, but the beach was basically empty. The beach was very pretty, with clean sand and water. However, it was VERY windy, so much so that I could not enjoyed the beach as much as I would like. I don't know whether this beach is typically this windy.
Great beach access park. Circle parking lot perfect for Rv’s and travel trailers. Easy walk from parking lot to beach. Lots of room on the beach. Wait for low tide! Beware this is a shallow beach and when tide comes in it really comes in.
Great place for a short walk in the dunes and to hit a stretch of sandy beach. Plenty of parking, clean restrooms & wide-open stretches to enjoy sunset.
Great area to pull out for lunch or just to enjoy a day on the beach. A long beautiful sandy beach. Very picturesque surroundings. Restrooms and picnic tables. The paved trail leads most of the way to the beach. There is also a small scenic overlook and a bench to just take it all in. We love this place!
