Big Pool is a small, shady, five site campground situated between Forest Service Road 18 and Fall Creek. Expect heavy use during summer weekends.
14 miles east of Lowell. From Lowell, Oregon: Beginning at the Lowell Junior/Senior High School at 65 South Pioneer Street, head north for 0.1 mile. Turn left at the 2nd cross street onto North Shore Drive. Drive for another 0.1 mile and turn right at the first cross street, which is South Moss Street. In approximately 0.8 miles, South Moss Street becomes the Jasper-Lowell Road. Continue for another 1.0 mile until the four-way stop. Turn right onto Big Fall Creek Road. Approaching the base of the Fall Creek Lake Dam, bear to the left after passing Winberry Creek Road (on your right). Note that Big Fall Creek Road becomes Forest Road 18 after crossing the National Forest boundary. Travel for 11.5 miles from the four-way stop and the destination will be on your right.
Big Pools is a pretty spot but has 3 major drawbacks.
Firstly, there are only three sites and there's no undergrowth to visually separate the sites.
Secondly, the sites are only about 40 feet from the road.
Lastly, the trails to the creek, Fall Creek, aren't easy for small children & definitely require scrambling over narrow rocky ledges to get down to the creek. Easy enough for older children & adults but not for younger children.
Even so there's the sound of the creek, lots of trees and the beautiful setting of Fall Creek.
One of the campgrounds that did not get all burned up in recent fires Big Poole is pristine, private as there is only 4 sites. Access to the creek is a little rugged but not terrible. It's a beautiful relaxing little spot. I would recommend it to anyone needing a nature retreat, it has a good energy.
