The most excellent camping experience. Top notch rangers and staff, extremely clean and well maintained grounds. Multiple fresh water spigot locations, trash cans located everywhere (emptied daily), bathroom is lit 24 hours a day, kept in pristine condition. Reservations online,

w/Military discount - $12, Regular - $15

(Rumors of 30lbs catfish being caught regularly)

Lumber River State Park offers a breathtaking display of nature’s beauty. The majesty of the Cypress trees lends a unique energy to the landscape that’s hard to find elsewhere. However, a word of caution to potential visitors: timing is everything. My midday visit during Carolina’s notorious heat proved a challenge. Not only was the sun intense, but the local insect population seemed particularly keen on making a meal out of me. For those looking to truly appreciate the park’s splendor without the additional challenges, I’d recommend choosing a cooler time of day or perhaps a different season altogether.

Beautiful peaceful place. Ideal for small water craft. The river is easily manageable and VERY scenic. Trails are well maintained as well.

Beautiful but seems to be best enjoyed by boat! We found out from a very kind and informative park ranger that Lumber River does NOT have boats for rental (BYOB-bring your own boat). However, you can call and set up a ranger-led tour ahead of time for your party, which is free. I’d recommend the park for people nearby but not for those coming long distance—unless you have a boat.

At the Princess Anne Access, we walked the Griffin Whirl trail. It was pretty but very buggy (definitely wear bug spray!). I enjoyed the quiet, cypress “knees,” and watching the strong river currents.

Note: The ranger said that people use floats but it’s not recommended; they’re likely to pop very quickly due to debris/branches in the water.

Pros: Awesome camping at sites 7 & 8! Bring a cart to haul your supplies from the parking lot. Very quiet and right by the river. Kayak/canoe put in/take out spots.

Friendly staff. Will definitely camp there again!

Cons: No shower and the bathroom is up the hill at the main part of the park.
