Located 25 miles east of Fallon on U.S. 50.
This dune is awesome! It’s totally bizarre in person since it just rises out of the earth. 5-stars for the dune, the rest of the place is meh. The toilets are terrifying and it seems like people just blare terrible music without any regard to others.
What a mind blowing thing to see, jutting up in the high desert! So glad I made the stop on my way across highway 50.
A must stop site if you’re driving Highway 50. Don’t worry about the access road. It is paved and I took the first pic from the car park near the entrance. I’d visited it a few years ago when it was just a sand dune in the middle of nowhere. It’s now been turned into a recreational area and is used by various off road vehicles. There is a charge to enter but if you talk nicely to the staff on the entrance they will give you a free 1 hour car pass if you’re just sight seeing for under an hour. When you first see it from Highway 50 you just can not appreciate just how big the sand dune actually is. Well worth a visit if you’re passing.
Be VERY careful when driving in and out. The access road is in perfect condition but the drainage channels across the road are nigh on impossible to see and they will trash the underside of your car if you hit them above the posted 5mph speed limit.
Sand Mountain Is always busy on Halloween, although do love riding my Quads and driving around on the Razer. This isn't quite the place to bring younger kids as it's EXTREMELY loud. Not the place to sleep LMAO.
Sand mountain is an awesome sight when you riding straight up the face, if you have a big bore CR 500 with a paddle tire you can make it up over the top without a paddle tire you will need to find out for yourself. There are plenty of dunes to ride in so you do not have to worry about finding a great place to ride. There is not any bad places to ride and if you like hard dirt there are plenty of dirt trails and of to the side of the oasis camp groun there is a huge mountain to climb!
