From Elkins go east on State Highway 33 for approximately 11 miles, turn left on Forest Road 91 at the top of Shaver's Mountain. Follow Forest Road 91 for approximately 3 miles. Bear Heaven Campground will be on the left.
The young witch who sent me here told me to sleep under the stars, nothing man made obscuring my view, if I really wanted to break the curse. But it was raining, and I was afraid. I slept in my car. Around 5:30 in the morning, my cat alerted me to a howling presence outside the vehicle. I felt no fear, as I sleepily peered out the windows, and was unable to catch a glimpse of the creature. I’m not sure if the howling being would have broken the curse, or the witch intended me some harm of her own, or if it was pure coincidence. Beautiful rainy forest on a mountain top, the trails are divine! The fog that rolled in during the afternoon was cleansing, if not entirely healing.
Peaceful, calm and utterly gorgeous. There’s a huge rock outcropping behind sites 4 and 5 that is incredibly cool to explore. We even got visited by a bear during the night—it was not intrusive at all, we only knew it was there because it left some waste behind. EXTREMELY cool place, we didn’t want to leave!
Small primitive campground, nice sites, and a really nice rock formation to climb around on within close walking distance to camp. Great access to Otter Creek hiking trails. Only downside: no water! Bring water with you!
Had a fantastic experience over two nights here. The campground feels secluded, but isn’t too far from Elkins. It’s clean and well maintained, and the sites aren’t too close together.
Don’t miss sunset atop the observation tower on Bickle Knob—only a ten minute drive up the road.
