Wonderful campground. So green and peaceful except for the train activity but I guess it depends on who you are. It doesn't bother me. Nice picnic tables, fire pits, grill stands. Bring your own water. No electric. It clearly states on the National Parks website that this campground does not allow RVs. There is also an early warning sign posted near the visitors center you pass on the way in. They mention the concern being the double railroad crossing to access the last leg of the road in. Meaning overall length is the concern. I can see that now that I'm here. It's a tight turn coming right off the tracks. It's a safety issue. Nice spacing between sites. Minimal shade at this time, but they've planted trees so eventually it will be a little less exposed. However, I am enjoying the open skies and the 360 views. Quite stunning here.
I like to stay at this campground while visiting New River Gorge national Park and preserve. No electric or water but has vaulted toilets. Lots of trains pass by day & night but I'm not bothered by the noise. Not a lot of shade either.
Loved this campground especially since it’s free!
Warning: the train is super loud and passes a couple times throughout the night.
Whoever used campsite 1 before us left a bunch of beers and cigarette butts in the fireplace which was frustrating. We cleaned up some of the trash but didn’t have enough room to take it all.
It's free and that's just hard to beat. It is for tents only but at least you don't have to worry about hearing generaters all night. There is a train that run right beside the campground but after 9 I didn't hear it go pass anymore. Plenty of spots to pick from and lots of room. Great view of the stars and there are bathrooms. Always a plus being right next to new river gorge national park.
Since camping is first come first serve in the park I can't really complain about ending up here, especially since it's free.
That said BRING EARPLUGS. The trains are extremely loud, and since there's a crossing they'll be blaring their horns at all hours of the night.
Otherwise a fantastic spot with river access, clean locker toilets, well maintained sites, and grills, picnic tables, and fire pits at all the sites.
Do be aware there is NO firewood to scavenge on site so you'll need to pick some up before setting up camp.
RV camping is not allowed but it seems they don't patrol that very heavily.
