About Campground

Kolob Reservoir is a 250-acre impoundment of Kolob Creek in southwestern Utah. This mountain reservoir is a popular place for the desert dwellers of St. George, as well as southern Nevada. The reservoir and most of the shoreline are owned by the Washington County Water Conservancy District. Dispersed camping is allowed and a few vault toilets are provided, along with a boat ramp and dock. Private land restricts access around the southwest bay. Seasonal access from the south is by paved county road from Virgin (Utah Highway 9); and from the north, by gravel road from the Right Hand Fork of Cedar Canyon (Utah Highway 14). Winter access is limited to snowmobile.

Directions

To get there from the town of Virgin, follow SR-9 to the turnoff at Kolob Terrace Road and continue north for 23 miles. From Cedar City head five miles up Cedar Canyon on highway 14, turn right onto Right Hand Canyon Road and continue for eight miles as the road changes to Kolob Road. Follow Kolob Road for another 11 miles to reach the reservoir.

So beautiful and cool in the hot summer heat. This is a delicious escape! We rented kayaks at the Kolob Store and they met us at the water’s edge with them. The reservoir isn’t too big or too small, and stocked with fish! One of my favorite places to go and watch the clouds skim by or the bald eagle fly around and fish!

Visited for the first time today and we loved it. The lake is pretty big. There is a dirt road that goes all the way around it, so you can drive around and choose a place where you want to camp, fish or just hang out. Lots of dust from the cars though. There are areas perfect for camping everywhere. Finding one that's not taken is another thing. We drove almost all the way around until we found a spot. There are also restroom structures here and there which is very nice. Lots of people camping, fishing, paddle boarding, boating, etc. Everyone is nice and respectful. We just came fishing for a day. The fish jumps out of the water teasing you 😂 unfortunately we didn't catch anything, but the guy next to us caught plenty. We will be coming back and we will definitely rent a boat to go to the middle of the lake to explore the tiny island. There is also a store nearby.

Loved getting out to Kolob reservoir. The scenic drive along Kolob terrace road was an experience in itself. Away from the crowds of Zion, this road crosses in and out of the park a few times along the way. As the road climbs in elevation, the drive offers breathtaking views of mountains, lush forestry, red rock scenery, and portions of Zion. Once we arrived at the reservoir, it was noticeably cooler thanks to the higher elevation. The reservoir sits among the mountains surrounded by aspens and evergreens with dispersed campsites along the lake. There are vaulted restrooms, which are decently maintained, dumpsters, along with a boat ramp, and dock. While it’s a great spot for kayaking, canoeing, float tubing, and fishing; for this trip we stayed on the shore. There were a few people fishing from their kayaks, as the water is cooler away from the shore so you are more likely to hook a fish. I throughly enjoyed spending time at this serene and picturesque reservoir. It offers a sense of tranquility that is hard to come by. Kolob reservoir is a place to escape the heat and crowds of southern Utah, making it a great little spot for a wonderful retreat. On my next visit, I plan to stop along some of the trailheads off Kolob terrace road and do some more exploring. Don’t skip out on this gem.
