There is fishing access to the Conejos River and Spectacle Lake. The lake is year round, with winter ice-fishing. Spectacle Lake Trail 730 begins 1/2 mile south on Forest Road 250. Ruybalid Trail 855 and Notch Trail 729 are also accessible. 2 sites have parking for two car groups. Both day and overnight use is permitted. The facility has 24 sites with tables and fireplaces (firewood is limited). 2 vault type toilets, refuse containers and pickup. There is a developed water system with 2 hand pumps. Most sites have a panoramic view of towering cliff walls. No boating is allowed on Spectacle Lake.
From Antonito, CO, take US 285 south 0.3 miles to Hwy 17. Continue straight on Rd. 17 and go 21.9 miles to Platoro sign (Forest Rd. 250). At sign, turn right onto Rd. 250 (dirt) and go 6.3 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign into campground.
Sssshhhhhhh!!!!! Dont tell anybody about this place!!!!! If you have been to this valley you know!! If not, go and you too will know why
Stayed two nights at the campground with no problems and clean bathrooms.
Very clean and well-kept.
Nice sites, graveled, level good picnic tables and fire pits with adjustable grates. Sites work for tents, truck camping and some pull-throughs.
Vaulted toilet facilities were very clean and had NO foul odor. Potable water via a hand pump. Bear proof trash containers.
Good location for walking access to Spectacle Lake and Conejos River for fishing. There is a gate to access the river near the water pump.
A drawback is that there are no hiking trailheads here the campground.
Road 250 to the campground is in poor condition, washboarded for 6 miles.
Stayed 2 nights at this hidden gem of a place in my trailer. Well spaced and managed, good water, clean restrooms.
